Uganda’s Path to Sustainability Waste management is a growing crisis across Africa, and Uganda is no exception. Plastics, especially single-use items, litter our streets and harm our environment. While Uganda has made strides, like banning plastic bags, the battle continues. Global Efforts & Uganda’s Role International agreements like the Basel Convention, the Paris Agreement, and Agenda 2063 are shaping Africa's response to waste. Uganda must implement stronger policies and invest in sustainable practices to meet these global goals. Rwanda’s waste management success, with waste segregation and recycling, shows Uganda’s potential for change. By embracing innovation and community-based solutions, we can reduce waste and create a circular economy. Let’s lead the change Together, we can turn waste into wealth, create jobs, and build a cleaner, greener Uganda. Let’s commit to sustainable waste management for a better future. #WasteManagement #Sustainability #Uganda #Africa #PlasticPollution #CircularEconomy @basel.convention.ir @ellenmacarthurfoundation @worldbank @iswa_social

In recent sustainability news, Nigeria aims to ban single use plastics by next year. Nigeria has been found to be among the world’s largest contributors to plastic pollution, with many other African countries also relying on single-use plastics both in consumption and in goods production. Understanding the prevalence of single-use plastics necessitates a developmental approach which recognises the socioeconomic and infrastructural reasons for plastic reliance, including inadequate waste management, under-resourced recycling solutions, and limited access to clean water. Beyond a ban on plastic, combating the usage of plastics that end up in landfills must be followed by improved access to alternative materials and recycling solutions in order for lasting sustainability to be reached. #Sustainability #SustainableDevelopment

With the population growing at a rate of 2.6% in Malawi, the per capita waste generation is projected to increase by 33% by 2050, and total waste generation could triple by 2050 (Turpie et al. 2019). Out of this, it is further predicted that total municipal plastic waste production in Malawi will be 508,000 metric tons per year in 2060. Do you know that plastic waste is a valuable raw material for manufacturers in plastics, food and beverages industries? Recycling of this lot of plastic waste can bring in the much-needed financing to support the country’s development agenda as we work towards achieving SDG 12. Use of innovative business models and technology can advance the plastics industry in Malawi. #AIIDEVAfrica

In 2024, I discovered that waste isn't a problem—it's an untapped economic revolution waiting to be unleashed. This year, Kaltani transformed from a local recycling initiative into a global sustainability catalyst. We didn't just collect plastic; we created economic pathways for communities, proving that environmental solutions can be powerful engines of opportunity. Our journey took us from local Lagos facilities to international stages like Waste Expo in Las Vegas, where we showcased how African innovation can solve global challenges. Strategic partnerships with organizations like the US Development Finance Corporation and roundtables on internal displacement demonstrated that waste management isn't just about cleaning environments—it's about building resilient economies. Three moments crystallized our mission this year: 1. "Transforming Waste into Wealth at Waste Expo" showed how Nigerian recycling innovations are gaining global recognition. https://lnkd.in/d6p5W4gF 2. Our discussions with the Abia State Government revealed how public-private partnerships can drive sustainable development. https://lnkd.in/dhD9R4Vz 3. Exploring carbon finance mechanisms demonstrated how financial innovation can accelerate climate action. https://lnkd.in/df-JXVCR By year's end, we weren't just managing waste—we were redefining its potential. Our work generated hundreds of green jobs, diverted millions of plastic waste from landfills, and started changing how the world sees Africa's circular economy. In 2025, we're scaling our vision: transforming waste management from a technical challenge into a platform for economic empowerment across Nigeria & Africa for sustainable livelihoods and communities. To every team member, partner, and community member who believed that waste could be more than just trash—thank you for turning possibility into progress. Happy New Year! #sustainability #circulareconomy #AfricaInnovation #LinkedInRewind #2024Wrapped
