At East Africa Gate (EAGate), we are proud to support the Menstrual Advancement Platform (MAP) as Permanent Secretariat, working closely with Agence Française de Développement, የሴቶችና ማህበራዊ ጉዳይ ሚኒስቴር Ministry of Women and Social Affairs and Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia and key public and private stakeholders in Ethiopia. This initiative is a clear example of how Public-Private Dialogue (#PPD) serves as a practical solution for: • Opening markets to private sector competition, • Driving the creation of sustainable jobs, and • Building efficient and inclusive value chains. By fostering collaboration between policymakers, the private sector, and civil society, PPD enables actionable solutions that address structural challenges, such as access to menstrual hygiene products, while also promoting economic growth and resilience. The work being done through MAP demonstrates the transformative potential of a well-structured PPD platform, not only in improving access to essential products but also in strengthening the value chain to ensure its sustainability. Check out the new paper from the ReBUILD team - Assessing the role of non-state actors in health service delivery and health system resilience in Myanmar. https://lnkd.in/exrZhi5W The paper, from our teams in Burnet Institute and Institute for Global Health and Development, QMU, explores the role of non-state actors (NSAs) during crises in #Myanmar, and provides insights on how the resilience capacities they build over time to provide services in adverse circumstances have informed the response to the latest crisis in the country. Maria Paola Bertone of QMU said: "NSAs, such as NGOs, civil society organisations and Ethnic Health Organisations, are essential for service delivery especially in a setting such as Myanmar where the reach of the public health system is low. However, their role over time, as well as their contribution to the resilience of the health systems, are understudied. This study shows how service provision increasingly relied on NSAs in time of crises in Myanmar. NSAs are shown to have built resilience capacities such as the flexibility and adaptability to provide services in adverse circumstances which are grounded in the experience of previous crises." Pleased to have participated in the High-Level event on EU-AU partnership in Global Health for Equitable Access convened by the European Commission, the African Union, the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024. The event was timely and critical in view of the ongoing negotiations of the Pandemic Accord, emphasizing the urgency of our collective action. The discussions were comprehensive, addressing key issues from pandemic preparedness, local manufacturing and affordable medicines, digital health, the health workforce to the strengthening of continental institutions like Africa CDC. I provided the scene setter for the roundtable on “Social protection for health: partnership efforts to foster equitable access through innovation and digitalization”. Caroline Gennez, Minister of Development Cooperation and Major Cities of Belgium, and Naha Hamdi Moukness, Minister of Health of Mauritania as the chair of the AU, co-chaired the round table. Why does social health protection matter? Because financial barriers are a significant obstacle to healthcare access, with the most substantial gaps in Africa and Asia. ILO also drew attention to the importance of ensuring decent wages and working conditions, including occupational safety and health, for the health workforce. Collective financing, broad risk pooling and rights-based entitlements are key elements of strong social health protection systems geared towards social justice. In the discussions that followed, Spain referred to social protection supporting structural transformation, productivity and resilience, AU drew attention to the rural and informal sectors. The examples of Morocco's investment in social protection, with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), and Cote d’Ivoire's digitalization efforts illustrate the diverse strategies countries can adopt to strengthen their social protection and health systems. Several references were made to the #UNGlobalAccelerator. Encouraging to see the focus, energy and commitment displayed at the meeting and that as humanity, we have not yet forgotten all that #COVID19 thought us. 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒚 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒇 06: 𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒖𝒕-𝑶𝒇-𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝑸𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆 The Universal Health Care envisages that all people have access to the full range of quality health services they need, when and where they need those, without being impeded by financial and other obstacles. Here there are many challenges though: rapid rural-to-urban migration, changing disease patterns, changing needs and expectations of patients/clients as a result of increased economic capacity and lifestyle changes and needs, a burgeoning private sector primarily motivated by profit and a host of other social, economic, climatological and geographical factors. These are pressing challenges that stand in the way of achieving UHC through the prevailing health sector system. Achieving the ambitious goal of UHC by 2030 is indeed going to be a formidable challenge also in view of the limited time span to the target timeline, resource constraints and the complexity of the issues that will need to be addressed. Consequently, hard choices will have to be made. In this backdrop, programmes targeting the most vulnerable with the highest impact will need to be prioritised in sequencing the actions to be taken. The Policy Brief has been developed on the basis of existing knowledge, literature review and expert opinion, and aims to review the relevant issues and identify the challenges and opportunities. The Brief puts forward a set of concrete proposals to attain UHC in Bangladesh in alignment with SDG 3. Our team R-Health Consult supports the Ministry of Health of Tunisia, World Health Organization, UN Inter-Agency Task Force on NCDs (UNIATF) and UNDP, in developing a physical activity investment case for Tunisia. This study seeks to evaluate the financial and economic costs associated with #physical inactivity in #Tunisia and to highlight the potential benefits of increasing active lifestyles. This initiative will serve as a compelling advocacy tool, providing concrete evidence of the long-term health, social, and economic benefits of investing in #physicalactivity promotion. https://lnkd.in/dZcQrt2V

Six years after the Paris Declaration and three years after the Accra Declaration on the effectiveness of official development assistance, we can see through the implementation of the FBR in Burkina Faso that aid for health still suffers from a lack of harmonization, ownership and alignment. This increases transaction costs for beneficiary administrations, with health personnel working at district level losing valuable time receiving missions and writing reports instead of providing health services. To remedy this, there must be a renewed interest in strengthening health systems and an increase in investment in this area, which promotes better alignment with national priorities and helps to repair some of the distortions caused by vertical programs and the lack of harmonization. Strengthening state capacities reduces the influence of technical and financial partners in the choice and implementation of health programs. (Traoré, 2023).
