At the CORNERSTONE Photonics Innovation Centre, we’re dedicated to 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆-𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀. By 2030, our goal is to establish a pipeline of silicon photonics-enabled companies across diverse sectors, powered by our open-source foundry.   We’re reaching out to 𝗬𝗢𝗨, our community of innovators, entrepreneurs, and researchers, who have highlighted the growing need for a 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀. The Politecnico di Milano's Quantum Computing & Communication Observatory organized the event "Quantum in progress: strategies from revolution to industry", open to stakeholders from industry and academia. Fabio Sciarrino PI of the Sapienza Università di Roma, a member of the of QLASS consortium, joined the panel discussion on "Italian Research and Technology Transfer". In particular, he discussed Italy's excellence in the field of photonics, focusing on the academic collaborations at the national and international level and the synergies between academia and startups. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐔𝐓’𝐬 𝐌𝐄𝐒𝐀+ 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲! Our own Prof. Dr. Floris Zwanenburg has secured a €14 million ERC Synergy Grant and is working with TU Eindhoven and Technical University of Munich to create revolutionary light-emitting microchips. But achieving this requires developing a unique material, silicon germanium, to enable faster, quantum-ready computing. 💡💻   This innovative project, “Bright Chips,” could redefine the future of technology. Heriot-Watt University has secured funding for three innovative projects under the £4.7 million (approx. $6 million) Photonics and Quantum Accelerator (PQA), a UKRI-funded initiative designed to accelerate Scotland’s photonics and quantum industries. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 This initiative is expected to drive significant economic growth, with Scotland’s photonics sector projected to surpass £4 billion (approx. $5 billion) by 2030. Our #NEoteRICH2020 project has concluded after four years of fruitful collaboration and the generation of innovative results in many fields related to neuromorphic photonics and their use in high speed image processing and classification. During the final review yesterday, the project received a very positive evaluation. One of the most significant and internationally unique outcomes is the development of advanced neuromorphic programmable photonic processors, supported by elegant, low-loss, optical packaging and electronic control. These processors, utilizing silicon photonics and Barium Titanate phase shifters, ensure ultra-fast, low-power optical computing for AI applications and image classification in flow cytometry. Many thanks to our coordinator JOSE CAPMANY from Photonics Research Labs (PRL), David Martínez Jiménez. PMP®, our technical manager Charis Mesaritakis, Ph.D University of the Aegean and all partners Ghent University, IBM, CEA-Leti, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), Eulambia Advanced Technologies, Teramount and Lumiphase for their valuable contribution to the success of the project. Although all contractual obligations are accomplished, NEoteRIC partners will continue collaborating as the new programmable chips are unique and very promising with respect to the state of the art. 𝗘𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗵𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 The European Commission announced this weekend that it will invest heavily in photonic chips, much of it in the Netherlands. Both in Eindhoven and Twente pilot lines, or pilot factories, can be started up to further test and grow this innovative technology. Thanks to the National Growth Fund project PhotonDelta, in which dozens of SMEs collaborate with technology and innovation partners, the Netherlands was already well positioned for photonic chip production. Knowledge institute TNO, TU Eindhoven and the University of Twente can now realise the proposed facilities. Dutch public funding will be further elaborated by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the coming period. The pilot lines are then expected to be able to start in mid-2025.
