One of the most critical barriers to progress in the marine conservation sector is the lack of genuine understanding of the importance, vulnerability, and interdependence of ocean systems. It is imperative to enhance ocean literacy on a global scale as the ocean transcends state borders. 🌊🐳🐋 I'm glad I got my recommendation letter from BlueMinds4Teachers and I think I was lucky enough to join the training program to learn more about ocean literacy. The course, held from April 9-23, 2024, aimed to strengthen the skills of teachers and educators in Ocean Literacy (OL). It was designed through the collaboration of marine/freshwater researchers and experts in education and social sciences, with the framework of OL at its core - linking ocean science and education for sustainability. The course has been designed through the collaboration of marine and freshwater research scientists as Melita Mokos , University of Zadar , Croatia; Francesca Alvisi ,Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche Italy; Maria Cheimonopoulou , Hydrobiological Station of Pella , Greece and Panayota (Yolanda) Koulouri , HCMR, Greece), and experts from education and social sciences (Athanasios Mogias , Democritus University of Thrace, Greece; Evelyn Paredes Coral , European Marine Science Educators' Association (EMSEA) , Belgium; Silja Teege, Sea Teach , Mallorca, Spain. Central to this course was the framework of OL which aims to link Ocean Science and Education for Sustainability. BlueMinds4Teachers is implemented by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research , the Institute of Marine Sciences of National Research Council and the University of Zadar with the support of EU4Ocean Coalition funded by the European Commission. Five HIMB graduate students trotted the globe in early July to participate in the European Coral Reef Symposium (ECRS), held every four years to promote the missions and objectives of the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS). ECRS is hosted in a rotating selection of European countries by the European Chapter of the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS), and the 2024 ECRS convened in Naples, Italy, at the Città della Scienza and the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station. "The 2024 theme was closing the knowledge disparities among tropical, temperate, and cold-water coral reefs," shared symposium organizers, "with the aim of uniting coral reef scientists, researchers, conservationists, policymakers, and reef managers to showcase the most recent research discoveries and facilitate the exchange of vital insights. This will play a pivotal role in informing international and national policies related to the preservation and sustainable management of coral reefs." All five HIMB participants presented their research. “It was a great opportunity to present in Naples, filled with connections old and new forged in espresso,” shares Callie Stephenson, a Graduate Assistant in HIMBʻs Donahue Lab. “We talked science, culture, and community over 4 days while attending talks and poster sessions. My biggest takeaway is the interconnectedness of all flavors of science to create the greater understanding of our oceans we will need to weather global climate change. Many talks focused on the fourth global bleaching event, on how corals responded, or intervention strategies. Others addressed local stressors, or larger questions about population connectivity. I left inspired to ask new questions and approach my own science from a new viewpoint.” #oceanconservation #conservation #marinebiology

Next up in our profile series is Freya Buckley - Postgraduate Earth Fellow: Cultural and environmental adaptations to new seasons Freya is a Film Studies MSc student at The University of Edinburgh, with an undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of Oxford. As part of the 'Cultural and environmental adaptations to new seasons project', Freya is helping to produce a literature review on seasons and sustainability, as well as establishing a network of people interested in this area of climate change knowledge. Out of work, Freya follows a vegan lifestyle for environmental and ethical reasons and is a member of Surfers Against Sewage. QN: What is your background and how do you think it will help you in your work as an Earth Fellow? While my academic background in the arts may not initially seem related to the role of Earth fellow, I am excited to bring an interdisciplinary approach to my work; especially since I am interested in finding creative ways to engage with issues of sustainability and the climate. As a long-time supporter of Whale and Dolphin Conservation and Surfer’s Against Sewage, I bring a genuine passion for environmental conservation to my role which I hope will shine through. QN: What is your project at the Edinburgh Earth Initiative about, and what is your role within it? The 'Cultural and environmental adaptations to new seasons' project aims to explore how seasons are changing as a result of Climate Change and the wider implications and effects this is having on sustainability and life more broadly. I am helping to produce a literature review on seasons and sustainability, as well as establishing a network of people interested in the seasons and seasonality.
