Semiconductor companies are accelerating the shift to 8-inch silicon carbide (SiC) production, with 14 new factories announced globally, according to TrendForce. 🔹 Key developments: ◾ STMicroelectronics (ST): Building an 8-inch SiC plant in Italy, aiming for full capacity by 2033, and a third production site in China by 2028. ◾ onsemi: Expanding its South Korea facility for 8-inch production by 2025. ◾ Infineon Technologies: Ramping up 8-inch SiC wafer production in Malaysia by 2025. ◾ Wolfspeed: Operating the largest 8-inch SiC plant in the U.S., with 20% wafer utilization as of June 2024. ◾ ROHM Co., Ltd., Bosch, Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. , Mitsubishi Electric, and others are making significant investments in 8-inch SiC plants across Japan, Germany, and the U.S. This growth highlights SiC's pivotal role in industries like automotive and energy storage, with production scaling rapidly in the next few years. Looking forward to presenting at #SEMI_ASMC our collaborative work with Vincent Fischer, agnes roussy, and Galliam Claude Yugma! Join us in Albany, May 13-16, to #network and discuss #solutions that improve the collective #manufacturing expertise of the #semiconductor industry. We will focus on a scheduling problem encountered in shop floors of R&D semiconductor manufacturing facilities, characterized by a large product mix in very small quantities with unique/non-standard/varying processing routes, little process control of engineering experiments, dynamic prioritization of research activities, and pre-process checks. In contrast to typical scheduling problems found in semiconductor manufacturing systems, we will provide and discuss the implications of factors of complexity (unknown parameters, evolving settings, R&D fab characteristics, etc.) on operations' scheduling specific to R&D environments. This work is partly conducted in the framework of the ACCURATE Project.

Number of the Day 👍 3️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ With an absolute industry game changer, Infineon Technologies has become the first company worldwide to successfully increase the production size of gallium nitride (GaN) wafers from 200mm to 300mm in an existing and scalable high-volume manufacturing environment. We can now produce 2.3 times more chips per wafer, allowing for even more efficient production and a stronger presence in the growing GaN market.
