Supporting Student-Athletes: A Guide for Parents, Mentors, and Coaches Venus Williams once said, "As a college athlete, you have to be excellent in both sports and academics. It’s a huge commitment, but it builds character and prepares you for whatever comes next in life." As student-athletes prepare to go back to school, it's crucial we’re there to support their journey. Are they balancing their roles as both student and athlete, or leaning more towards one? What path do they want to be on? Remember, you play a pivotal role in this journey. Here’s how you can provide the best support: 1. Encourage Balance: Help student-athletes find a healthy balance between academics and athletics. 2. Align Support with Goals: Ensure your guidance aligns with their academic and athletic aspirations. 3. Be a Mentor: Offer advice and share experiences to help them navigate challenges. 4. Celebrate Achievements: Recognize and celebrate their accomplishments, both big and small. 5. Provide Resources: Make sure they have access to the necessary resources for success in both areas. By offering balanced and aligned support, you can help student-athletes enjoy their journey and stay true to themselves. #studentathlete #mentorship #academicgoals #supportsystem #athletewellbeing #performanceoptimization #collegesports

Parents, remind your student athletes to consider all their options, especially if they receive an offer before their junior or senior year. It's crucial to explore all the schools on their target list to ensure they find the best fit both athletically and academically. European Athletics has collaborated with some of the most respected names in the sport to produce a ‘must-see’ series of webinars, for all coaches of young, developing athletes. The Youth Coach Webinar series is being released this week (25-29) via the E-Learning platform: https://lnkd.in/eMhkCd2X The first webinar is entitled Practical Ideas for Coaching the Young Developing Athlete and is presented by Scott Grace, England Athletics National Technical Lead for Youth Development Lifelong love of the sport and fulfilling potential are the dual ambitions of Scott’s presentation. This is achieved by creating the correct coaching environment and considering what, and how we coach. The webinar includes practical examples, progressions, planning and programmes. Young athletes of the same age vary in size and maturity. There are also 4 types of learning styles, Visual, Auditory, Tactile and Kinesthetic, which Scott explains and considers stages of learning. What are the benefits of Early versus Late Developers? We have all seen the biggest kid in the race destroy the opposition at U16, but how many of these young ‘talents’ are still performing at under 23 and beyond? For all, play and practise should be fun and progressive, and Scott offers many practical suggestions and ideas to freshen up the fun of any training environment, whilst ensuring the sessions are engaging and purposeful. #YourSportForLife #athletics #development #coaching

This evening we hosted a termly ‘Dedicated Athlete Seminar’ for our students & parents on the topic of ‘balancing school work & training’ and it was brilliant. We are fortunate to have three U6 students who are living the experience of being student athletes and coming to the end of their A Level studies, whilst also striving for an academy contract & international rugby age group honours. They spoke maturely & with tremendous self awareness, providing the younger students and parents attending great tips & strategies to help manage the competing priorities they have in a sixth form and as pathway athletes. Their key takeaways: Start practicing scheduling your time early in your education so you get better at it and later, when time pressures mount, you are more effective and efficient at planning. As a student athlete you become more efficient at your work & waste less time. If you make a plan stick to it - don’t get distracted on phones etc if you have set that time for work then do the work, or everything will unravel! Make time for you! - build time into your schedule for switch off & re-charge. Communicate honestly with your teachers and parents - to ask for help is not weakness. Be prepared to make sacrifices - they argued it’s not a sacrifice if you love doing it & get intrinsic value from it! Understand your Why? - it helps with everything else. Coping with injury or under par performances - Treat adversity as an opportunity! Move on & don’t expect to be perfect all the time. Just be the best you can at that time. Whilst at school prioritise your academics. All three of these students have proved great role models & ambassadors. Most importantly they are great young men who sport has helped shape & I am sure will go on to great things whether that be in professional sport or other professional life. If you have great student role models in your school then I would encourage you to give them the platform to share their insights & learnings like this, as their impact and reach is far greater than we, as their teachers, can ever achieve. #studentathletes #schoolsport #rolemodels #athleticdevelopment

🏑 Transform Your Middle School PE Class with This Lacrosse Lesson Plan! 🥅 👉 Prompt: “I am a middle school PE teacher. Create a lesson plan that teaches students the basics of lacrosse. Include a brief introduction, basic rules, and a practice activity.” Teaching middle school PE is no easy feat, but incorporating creative sports like lacrosse into your curriculum can take your class to the next level! This lacrosse lesson plan is not just about teaching the game—it’s about engaging students in teamwork, coordination, and having FUN while learning something new. Here are 3 big reasons this lesson plan can make a difference in your classroom: 1️⃣ Introduces Students to a Unique and Inclusive Sport Lacrosse might not be the most common sport in your area, which is precisely why it’s so impactful. It gives students an opportunity to explore something new, leveling the playing field between seasoned athletes and beginners. Everyone starts fresh, which fosters inclusivity, curiosity, and a sense of accomplishment when they learn a new skill. 2️⃣ Builds Foundational Skills That Transfer to Other Sports From hand-eye coordination (passing and catching) to agility (scooping and cradling), the basic skills in lacrosse improve overall athleticism. These transferable skills boost confidence and carry over into other sports and physical activities, making your students more well-rounded athletes. 3️⃣ Encourages Teamwork and Communication In the mini-game portion of this lesson, students learn to work as a team, communicate effectively, and support one another to score goals. These social and teamwork skills are as valuable in life as they are on the field! 💡 Pro Tip: If lacrosse equipment isn’t readily available, modify the activity with foam balls and other creative alternatives. The goal is engagement, not perfection! At The Classroom Newsletter, we understand how overwhelming teaching can be.
