#IPC develops #consensus on #GPP: pustular lesions on #acral regions should not rule out a diagnosis of GPP. The authors moreover deemed pustular #duration nonessential for diagnosis. "GPP is a life-threatening disease," they wrote. "Therefore, diagnosis should not be delayed by any predefined duration of pustulation or #BSA." Supporting elements such as lakes of pus, fatigue, fever, and painful skin may occur with GPP, they added, but are not diagnostic. https://lnkd.in/ddHvixwg

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the most common cause of dry eye disease (DED). The Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society’s Dry Eye Workshop II identified MGD as a prevalent and chronic disorder. It is often characterized by increased epithelial cell growth, blockages, meibum accumulation, gland dilation, and, ultimately, gland loss due to atrophy. The theory of epithelial hyperkeratinization remains a subject of debate, but the essential role of functional meibomian glands in secreting the tear film’s lipid layer—and thereby preventing rapid tear evaporation and preserving ocular surface health—is universally acknowledged: https://bit.ly/3zqSLLV

Tuesday, February 27, 2024 Bariatric surgery provides long-term blood glucose control, type 2 diabetes remission NIH-supported study shows long-term benefits of surgery compared to medication and lifestyle change. People with type 2 diabetes who underwent bariatric surgery achieved better long-term blood glucose control compared to people who received medical management plus lifestyle interventions, according to a new study supported by the National Institutes of Health. The participants who underwent bariatric surgery, also called metabolic or weight-loss surgery, were also more likely to stop needing diabetes medications and had higher rates of diabetes remission up to 12 years post-surgery. Results of the study were published in JAMA(link is external) and funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of NIH.

Haemophilia is a rare blood disease in Australia, and it is present in 1 in 6000 males (mostly!). Rare conditions are often misunderstood. Today is Rare Disease Day, and I am posting to support families affected by Haemophilia and all rare diseases. It can be a frightening and lonely journey, constantly having to advocate while in crisis and monitoring life. In Australia, we are fortunate to have exceptional Haematology teams and specialists supporting Bleeding Disorders. It is a small community but strong. Thank you to everyone who supports the Haemophilia Community in Australia. Here are some facts about Haemophilia; -Bleeding (‘bleeds’) can occur internally in any body part, including joints, muscles and organs, particularly after an injury or surgery. It can also happen without an apparent cause (sometimes called ‘spontaneous’). -Over time, repeated bleeding into joints and muscles can cause arthritis, chronic pain and disability. -Specialised treatment is needed to help blood clot normally. With appropriate treatment, haemophilia can be managed effectively. You can read more about Haemophilia here https://lnkd.in/g-tKQ6gs #rarediseaseday #haemophilia #haematology
