Adré was once a quiet town perched on the border between Chad and Sudan. It is now the main hub for people escaping a genocide and famine that has given way to the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Well over 700,000 refugees have fled into eastern Chad. The country has received more Sudanese this year than the previous 20 years combined. Operation Broken Silence is helping to provide emergency food and medical support for some of the most at-risk refugees in the Adré camps. While the world focuses on escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, millions have fled the civil war in Sudan, facing hunger, disease, and violence in refugee camps. - Many Sudanese have abandoned their homes due to violence and lack of food, leading to the largest displacement crisis globally. - Refugees in eastern Chad deal with terrible living conditions, constant hunger and thirst, and little access to healthcare, resulting in preventable deaths. - The war has destroyed infrastructure, including trade routes, farms, and hospitals, causing a severe hunger crisis. - The RSF militia, backed by the UAE, has been accused of ethnic cleansing and serious human rights abuses, such as murder and sexual violence. - Despite many reports of these atrocities, the international community has largely overlooked the crisis in Sudan, leaving refugees to survive on own. https://lnkd.in/dn89sgAz

📢 The humanitarian crisis in Sudan has entered its 18th month, displacing 10 million people, half of whom are children. Over 2 million refugees are seeking safety in neighboring countries. Hostilities are fueling the world’s largest hunger crisis, with nearly 26 million facing acute hunger. Famine has been confirmed in the Zamzam camp in North Darfur, and almost 5 million children and pregnant or breastfeeding women are acutely malnourished. Children are out of school for the second year, and women and girls are suffering alarming levels of violence. 🚨 Urgent humanitarian action is critical, but under-funding and insecurity are hampering response efforts. These atrocities must be condemned internationally, and the global community must work to resolve this conflict with the greatest urgency. 🌍 💡Read more from UNGA: https://lnkd.in/eSS6C2r8 Photo: © UNHCR/Ying Hu (Newly arrived Sudanese refugees near the border in Adre, Chad.)

Violence forces over 8.7 million people to flee ▶ On 15 April 2023, fighting broke out between government troops and paramilitary fighters. The fighting affected both the capital Khartoum and other regions in the country. Important infrastructure such as hospitals and schools were attacked and destroyed. ▶ Since the outbreak of the fighting, more than 8.7 million people have fled inside and outside the country and the numbers are increasing from week to week. Poor security situation jeopardises humanitarian aid ▶ The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) speaks of 18 million starving people. The weakened people are more susceptible to disease. Every seventh child is said to be malnourished. ▶ The World Health Organisation (World Health Organization) has warned of a spread of infectious diseases. ▶ Over 1.8 million people have fled across the borders to neighbouring countries. At the same time, more than 6.6 million people are fleeing the violence within the country. This includes refugees who had previously sought refuge in Sudan and have now been forced to flee again. In the conflict regions, there are massive violations of human rights, especially sexual violence, which affects refugees and the local population alike. ▶ The UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency supports both those seeking safety in the country and refugees who have fled to safety in neighbouring countries. These people urgently need to be protected. ⏩ Don't look away! You can support the #UNHCR via the UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe here: https://lnkd.in/dw6quDay

How can you help? As I write this, 200,000 people - mainly women and children who have fled unimageable chaos and violence in Sudan - are stuck on the border of Chad. They are waiting to be relocated to refugee camps, camps UNHCR has to build from scratch because existing camps are overcapacity. This means constructing shelters, building sanitation systems, drilling boreholes for water, setting up schools and healthcare centres. Things that help these resilient people start their lives again. And with UNHCR's expertise, that's the easy part. The hard part is getting the funds needed to do it. Until that happens, families will remain in limbo in unhygienic, dangerous conditions - children's lives lost and stories left unheard. How can you help? https://lnkd.in/e4ieqkwg.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency urges action as famine is declared in Sudan: The warning signs were there for months. Now we have the tragic confirmation that there is #famine in Sudan’s North Darfur region. Displaced women, children and men are dying of #hunger, malnutrition and disease. This is a clear indication of the fragility of people forced to flee, many of them multiple times over. With appalling #HumanRights atrocities, the forced #displacement of over 10 million people since the start of the war last year, and the lack of the most basic services for a large percentage of the population, the world’s most pressing humanitarian catastrophe is growing and deepening every day, threatening to engulf the whole region. The arrival of millions of #refugees and internally displaced people is stretching host communities to a breaking point. As famine and hunger increase amidst the violence in Sudan, those crossing borders to find safety will arrive in more and more precarious conditions. Urgent action is vital to avert even more death and suffering. This brutal war must end. Humanitarians must have access to deliver lifesaving aid. International donors need to step up their support to address the persistent underfunding of this and other #humanitarian crises. It is crucial to stand in solidarity with individuals and communities in need. The people of #Sudan have suffered enough! USA for UNHCR https://lnkd.in/e5kuTjeW

Tough to read but important.
Our All Things Considered team just spent several weeks in Rwanda reporting. We visited a refugee camp about a half-hour’s drive from the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than one million people in the last two years have been forced to flee their homes in the eastern DRC due to worsening violence, and some end up here. The Congolese army is fighting M23, a rebel group that's been operating in the region for more than a decade. The conflict is a legacy of the 1994 Rwandan genocide — which began 30 years ago this month — and the ethnic tensions that propelled it.

In Sudan, the escalating conflict has led to critical challenges for civilians cut off from essential aid. As highlighted by UNHCR, the situation demands urgent attention and action. Through a recent mission, we've seen firsthand the severe impacts in areas like Omdurman and Darfur, where people urgently need food, medical aid, and shelter. Every contribution can make a difference in the lives of those enduring these hardships.
