On November 18th, we convened a Core Partners' Meeting to address critical challenges and opportunities in strengthening global water and sanitation regulatory systems. The discussions yielded key insights and actionable steps: 🔷 Survey Findings Ensuring regulatory bodies’ independence and transparency. Establishing clear legislative frameworks to support effective governance. Prioritizing equitable access for marginalized groups and tailoring strategies to national contexts. 🔷 Addressing Climate Impacts Developing integrated water resource management frameworks to enhance resilience. Leveraging technology and closing data gaps to improve regulatory decision-making. 🔷 Fostering Collaboration Promoting inclusive partnerships and public awareness through enhanced transparency and accountability mechanisms. 🔷 Defining Political Commitment Emphasizing funding, resources, and legal frameworks to sustain long-term regulatory effectiveness. 🔷 Future Directions Establishing working groups to focus on government engagement, resilient regulatory frameworks, and inclusive service delivery. This meeting reinforced our collective commitment to advancing impactful, sustainable, and inclusive regulatory practices worldwide. Uganda, with its diverse ecosystems ranging from arid plains to lush wetlands, faces significant challenges in water resources management. The country's reliance on agriculture and the growing demand for water in urban areas exacerbate the pressure on its water systems. Effective management strategies are essential to ensure sustainable water supply for all sectors. The government of Uganda has implemented various policies and initiatives aimed at improving water governance, such as the catchment-based approach for integrated water resources management. This approach emphasizes the importance of considering the entire watershed when making decisions about water use and conservation. Additionally, Uganda is investing in infrastructure to increase access to clean water and sanitation facilities, particularly in rural communities. However, challenges remain, including the need for increased funding, public awareness campaigns, and stronger enforcement of water regulations. International partnerships and local community engagement are crucial for advancing Uganda's water management efforts and achieving long-term sustainability.

👀 NEW POLICY BRIEF FOR KENYA: In this policy brief we discuss the impacts of #charcoal bans and restrictive supply-side legislations in hashtag #Kenya, highlighting how livelihood producers are disproportionately impacted by them. The brief was written by Rebecca Clube, Emmanuel Cyoy, Meron T., and Noah Mayieka. 🌱💧 Breaking New Ground: Tanzania Launches its First $21M Green Bond for Drinking Water 💧🌱 Exciting news from Tanzania as the Tanga Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (TANGA UWASA) pioneers the country's entry into the green bond market! With the issuance of a $20.8 million green bond, Tanga Uwasa is poised to revolutionize #waterinfrastructure, aiming for universal coverage in Tanga City and supporting environmental conservation efforts in the region. This landmark transaction, supported by Financial Sector Deepening Tanzania (FSD) Africa, signals a new era of sustainable financing in the country. By listing the bond on the DAR ES SALAAM STOCK EXCHANGE (DSE) with an attractive yield of 13.5%, Tanga Uwasa sets a precedent for #waterfinancing diversification and underscores Tanzania's commitment to achieving universal access to drinking water by 2030. If you've heard of container-based sanitation, but don't know so much about it, now is your chance to catch up on what you really need to know. Most importantly, in case you were wondering, the UNICEF/WHO JMP recognizes CBS as "improved sanitation"; thus, endorsing it as a safely managed sanitation service under SDG6.2. As such, it should always be considered as a serous contender in both developmental and humanitarian contexts by governmental authorities, NGOs and public and private service providers as an appropriate, cost-effective, and inclusive sanitation option; which is particularly appropriate in areas where due to engineering, legal or logistical constraints, other systems are often simply not feasible. This is very exciting indeed, what we will need however to ensure sustained impact that reaches universal access for #sanitation services is sanitation planning that includes the full spectrum of specific activities, timelines, assigned budgets, and accountabilities that are required to implement a market-led area wide inclusive sanitation approach, i.e., strong implementation arrangements. The areawide plans needs to consider all the segments of the population and the different approaches and interventions that will be required for them to all get access. These will include stimulating markets, strengthening governance and regulations, increasing financing, and planning for subsidies to reach the poor. Planning should be done through a collective impact platform that brings together the various actors that are currently siloed.

The Tanga Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (Tanga Uwasa) in Tanzania has just issued a $20.8 million green bond.
