Last week, we were honored to give certificates to two incredible IT students as part of the Get Ready to Succeed scholarship program in partnership with BCause Foundation. The scholarship program supports high-school students from the 11th and 12th grades as well as students at state universities who have lost one or both of their parents or were raised in specialized institutions. Congratulations to all scholarship recipients!

There is a common belief that a teacher’s professional growth plateaus after the first few years of teaching. Research by Rice (2003), Hanushek and Luque (2003), and Rockoff (2004) support this, suggesting a steep learning curve in the first three to five years, followed by a leveling off. However, resent research challenges this view. A review by Podolsky et al. (2019) indicates that teacher effectiveness can continue to improve throughout a career. Supporting ongoing teacher development is crucial. Effective CPD positively impacts teacher performance and student outcomes. Policymakers, researchers, and school leaders must ensure all teachers have access to high-quality CPD, regardless of their level of experience. In summary, while teacher development may slow after the initial years, it does not stop. Continuous professional growth is possible and should be a priority for the education sector. For more information on how an effective CPD looks like, I would recommend everyone to read the research published by Education Endowment Foundation:

4 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗼 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲 Is education policy something I should consider for my children? Or should I rely on savings and my income to fund their education? When choosing to purchase a cover or not, it’s good to note these 4 things; 1️⃣ 𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝘁 𝗡𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 When most of us were studying, our parents had tracts of land, and livestock, among other properties. During our university days, it was common for parents to divide and sell part of their land to settle school fees. Unfortunately, things have changed today and most of us don’t have those large tracts of land. As a result, we do not have a backup plan for our children’s school fees if we lose our income. 2️⃣ 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 Are you familiar with the fundraisers that villagers organized when a child received a university admission letter? If yes, then you know villagers were excited about such events and were willing to support one of their own to acquire an education. Unfortunately, things don’t work the same nowadays. Very few people turn up and the amount raised is usually less than the tuition fee. 3️⃣ 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 The tuition fee amounts keep increasing by the day. A simple comparison of the university education between today and 2018 will shock you. If you research the same you will learn that the tuition fee has increased by 2 or more times the initial amount. Without prior planning, it’s easy for your child to lose a learning opportunity. Furthermore, education keeps getting more and more expensive! 4️⃣ 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 Death is not a respecter of persons it comes anytime and leaves some without parents. As a parent with children relying on you to educate them, you should build a plan that will ensure your children complete their education whether you’re present or not. Unlike the generation before us, we have all odds against us! As a result, we must embrace robust measures to see our children through their education goals. Are you ready to secure your children’s education?

Despite some noises in the media, going to university continues to be a brilliant option for the vast majority of people. Higher education transforms lives for the better and graduate outcomes remain strong! As we are coming to the end of results day, I just want to reflect on some of the unsung heroes who are supporting those from less advantaged backgrounds access university - namely those charities who either have the mission to enable widening participation, or who support specific disadvantaged groups. At the UPP Foundation we have been lucky enough to support and fund some of these organisations. They include: The Brilliant Club, Villiers Park Educational Trust and The Access Project who do great work on fair access to university for those from poorer backgrounds. Get Further who provide tutoring in English and Maths to those retaking their GCSEs - vital to enable people to progress with their education, including access to university. National Network for the Education of Care Leavers and Become who do sterling work to support those who have experienced care go to and succeed at university. Unlock - for people with criminal records who provide a second chance for those who have criminal records - including access to HE. There are many other fabulous charities and civil society groups who we have not yet been lucky enough to fund and support, but on behalf of the UPP Foundation I want to say a big thank you to everyone who works or volunteers as mentors/tutors for these vital organisations - you make a real difference! #resultsday #university #wideningparticipation #highereducation

An interesting case study by our Advocate Partners, The Forum on Education Abroad and EF Study Abroad. Take a moment to read more. #AdvocatePartners #Leadership #IntlEd #EducationAbroad #StudyAbroad
As the Future Nobel Laureates Scholarship Program enters its fourth year, The Forum on Education Abroad and EF Study Abroad developed a case study on the impact of an education abroad program designed and implemented based on guidance from the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad. We hope this study examining our experiences so far can be a helpful resource to colleagues across our community seeking to implement the Standards of Good Practice in their own education abroad programming: https://lnkd.in/exQmMzyW #EFStudyAbroad #studyabroad #internationaleducation #educationabroad

The Forum on Education Abroad did a case study on the Future Nobel Laureates Program. Check it out! My favorite takeaway was "Even experienced professionals and organizations need to update and re-evaluate their policies from time to time (5.1.2). Having strong, clear policies in place is a foundation for strong relationships and clear expectations between partner organizations and between program faculty/staff and program participants." Also, applications are now open for this awesome international scholarship! (see post below)

Question: "Why do some universities offer elective courses called SOPHIA where completing them doesn't affect a student's GPA, only their overall credits? This seems unfair and like a money-making scheme for schools that are supposed to be nonprofit. The U.S. Department of Education may need to investigate #colleges like Capella University et al who engage in such practices. #collegesanduniversities should rethink their policies on grading for courses that require the same effort and learning, regardless of whether they're paid or free." https://lnkd.in/eJDMaYUq

The Menebhi Foundation is a charitable organisation dedicated to making education in Mathematics and English accessible to students in state schools, regardless of their location or background. By offering free online tutoring, the foundation aims to close the gap in educational inequalities, providing quality lessons remotely to students who may not have access to extra help or resources in these core subjects. With a focus on Maths and English, the Menebhi Foundation supports students at various academic levels by connecting them with experienced educators who tailor lessons to meet their individual needs. The remote format makes it convenient for students across the country to participate, giving them a chance to improve their skills in these crucial areas. The foundation's mission is to empower young learners, ensuring that no one is left behind due to financial constraints or geographical limitations. Through this initiative, students can build confidence, develop strong academic foundations, and achieve success in their studies—all at no cost to their families or schools. By partnering with state schools, the Menebhi Foundation works directly with educators to complement the national curriculum and offer targeted support where it is most needed. This initiative helps to foster a more equitable education system, giving all students the chance to thrive academically and prepare for their future.
