April is National Volunteer Month, and so we wanted to close the month with an important reminder for employers: those who make a point to support and work with charities are not only contributing to the wider community, but are also making a smart business move, too.
It was discovered that businesses that donate over 0.5% of turnover were twice as likely to report enhancements in company reputation, and were nearly 50% more likely to see it help recruit and retain staff. It's a contradiction in terms when a charity that is focussed on supporting people (whether that's with physical or mental health, food poverty, homelessness and housing, welfare, etc) does its best for its beneficiaries, but fails to support its staff and ensure that their health and welfare needs are met.
This subject has popped up on my timeline a few times recently and I've found it quite triggering.
So many charities do fantastic work with the people they work with - there are hundreds of case studies and testimonials to the benefits that they have provided to the communities that they serve.
But if you asked the staff about their well-being, they often fall below par on looking after those who work for them.
I recently heard the statistic that 32% of charities are reporting issues with staff well-being (compared to just 7% last year).
But what are charities doing to address this?
Yes, many charities now have mental health first-aiders. Many have independent systems in place where staff can access advice and counselling.
So why is the number going up?
I have my theories, but would be interested to hear yours!

I had a frustrating conversation with a Manager from a charity known for championing #mentalhealth.
For their hardworking staff team, they provide them with mostly the minimum:
👎 Minimum holiday allowance (20 days + BH's)
👎 Minimum employer pension contribution (3%)
👎 Low salaries
👎 No other employee benefits
Why?
They offer the minimum so that they can prioritise maximising the #donations they receive.
They Manager was concerned that individual donors, trusts and grants would expect this 🤔
I appreciate that donation responsibility is undeniably important and I know that many charity budgets are tight.
Yet, I'm sure I'm not the only one who believes that maximising donations should never come at the expense of the well-being and livelihoods of a charity's employees.
Charities are built on empathy and compassion for a cause.
That should extend to how a #charity treats its own team members.
Cutting corners on staff support just doesn't sit right.
I for one would NOT want to #donate to a charity that has a leadership with this mindset.
