The Scandinavian workplace model and 'Teal' organizations share a powerful principle: leadership is not a role, but a mindset. Internationals who start working here in Denmark are often surprised and a bit baffled by how flat the hierarchy is. Closely linked to the embedded cultural mindset of Jante Lov, that no one is better than anyone else, this plays out in the workplace in such that you would often not be able to tell from interactions who is more senior or junior. Everyone is meted the same level of respect and eye-to-eye treatment. This model supports greater collaboration, autonomy and mutual trust, and even decision-making can be more distributed across the organisation. This mirrors one of the key tenets of self-managed, teal-inspired organisations, where there are, in fact, no bosses, so everyone must take responsibility for leading themselves and the projects they are working on. Both the Scandinavian and teal approaches nurture a culture of ownership and innovation, allowing organizations to be agile and resilient. With my fascination of teal ways of working I'm glad to also be living in a society where the traditional approach is also naturally aligned. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our roundtable discussion yesterday. It was fantastic to hear insights from Jon, Maureen, Julia, Stephen, Jessica, Jonathan and Julie - who’ve all embarked on / been through impressive scale up journeys. Overall the conversation highlighted some key challenges and opportunities faced when scaling a business, along with how to maintain a positive culture throughout. Anyone who’s been through growth knows - There’s a lot of juggling! And as our speakers rightly highlighted, there’s so much you need to consider too. Including: The cultural shifts needed to support career development 💭 It’s so important to put your current culture under the microscope and consider if things need to change. You also need to be mindful that growth isn’t always linear, there may be set backs and your culture needs to be strong enough to navigate this. Implementation of hybrid work policies and clear delivery expectations 💻 Our speakers rightly highlighted that hybrid working can be a blessing for a scaling business, however if it’s not implemented correctly, it can be a curse. Clear communication is key and recognising individual needs. Behaviour and attitude from leaders 😊 You have to set an example. Your behaviour and attitude influences everyone else’s. You should also ask yourself how you want your team to feel when they leave for the day. Accountability, workloads and taking ownership 🙋 If no one is accountable, then it won’t get done. Responsibilities, accountability and workloads need to be very clear. You also need people who’re willing to take ownership. This morning, I attended Culture Amp's "Culture First" event, an assembly of leaders and People & Culture professionals discussing the pressing challenges within modern organisations. The highlight of the event for me was an illuminating session led by Esther Perel, whose wisdom never fails to leave a lasting impression. Esther Perel is renowned for her expertise in relationships and psychology, delved into the evolving dynamics of the workplace, shedding light on critical aspects that resonate deeply with both leaders and employees alike. Some key take-aways: 🌱 Balancing Empathy and Responsibility: Effective leadership requires a delicate balance between empathy and accountability, as too much compassion without clear expectations can hinder growth and progress. 🌱 Humility in Action: Driving action with humility, rather than overpromising solutions, sets the foundation for authentic leadership and trust. 🌱 Embracing reality involves confronting and addressing the truth of the situation at hand. An exemplary instance of this principle in action can be observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Organisations that openly acknowledged the challenges posed by the pandemic and prioritised transparent communication created a space for collective understanding and resilience. By openly acknowledging the situation, these organisations fostered a culture of trust and adaptability, enabling them to navigate the uncertainties with clarity and cohesion. Following the session, an engaging debate ensued regarding the benefits of remote work versus office presence, with one word resonating consistently throughout: "balance." It highlighted the significance of striking a harmonious equilibrium between flexibility and structure, autonomy and collaboration. This pursuit of balance not only enhances productivity and well-being but also fosters a culture of inclusivity and adaptability within the workforce.
