▫️#NewZealand Prime Minister Christopher Laxon announced a new aid package to #Ukraine worth NZ$16 million (USD9.8 million) during the NATO summit in #Washington, DC. This was announced by Ukraine's Ambassador to #Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko. The aid will be distributed in several areas: 6 million New Zealand dollars ($3.68 million) will go to #military needs, and 10 million New Zealand dollars ($6.12 million) will be used for humanitarian aid. ▫️The military aid includes $2.45 million for the #DroneCoalition, led by the #UnitedKingdom and #Latvia, and $1.23 million for Ukraine's military #medical needs. "New Zealand understands that although we are far away from Ukraine, what is happening there affects all of us, and we are committed to #supportingUkraine for the long term," said Lacson. ▫️The total amount of aid provided by New Zealand to Ukraine has reached 130 million New Zealand dollars (approximately 79.5 million US dollars). In light of the updated IPC report, we are devastated by the failure of world leaders to heed earlier advice and take action. The updated report reiterates what we have said all along: an immediate ceasefire and increased aid access is the only way to save lives and avert famine. The report indicates slight improvements in conditions in the northern regions of Gaza in March and April, due to increased aid access, and shows that Israel is entirely able to halt the suffering of innocents. These conditions have deteriorated once again because of the military incursion in Rafah and the complete blockade at the border. The narrative that Hamas is solely responsible for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza by "stealing" aid is a misleading and oversimplified explanation that fails to account for the broader context of the Israeli occupation and military actions. The blockade and repeated military assaults have had a devastating impact on the lives of Gazans, leading to shortages of essential supplies, the destruction of vital infrastructure, and high civilian casualties. While Hamas bears some responsibility for the political instability in the region, the primary onus lies on Israel, as the occupying power, to ensure the well-being of the civilian population under its control. A more nuanced understanding of the situation is necessary to address the root causes of the humanitarian crisis and work towards a just and sustainable resolution to the conflict.
