Our Managing Partner, Mr. AB Mahmoud, SAN, OON gave the opening remark at the Water Summit and Exhibition convened jointly by the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria and the Shehu Musa Yardua Foundation at Shehu Musa Yardua Center Abuja. The summit whose key objective was to raise awareness of the impact of climate change on Nigeria's water resources had in attendance a diverse group of participants from governments, the private sector, civil society, academia, and international organizations. While delivering his insightful remark, Mr AB Mahmoud, OON, SAN spoke on the important role water plays in sustaining development, health, food security and economic progress. He acknowledged the increasingly severe crisis in water and how it threatens our socioeconomic stability and environmental health hindering our nation’s development and posing serious threats to our communal harmony and national security. He also charged all stakeholders, with practical ways to overcome these challenges which will require innovative policy changes and significant investment in infrastructure and technology applications which can be achieved through coordination and cooperation among all stakeholders in the public and private sector and civil society. Mr Mahmoud SAN remarked, "Today, we are joined by a diverse group of participants from governments, the private sector, civil society, academia, and international organizations. Each of you plays a crucial role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s water management and climate resilience. Your expertise, experiences, and commitment to change are invaluable as we chart a course towards a more sustainable and prosperous future..." #WaterSummit #ClimateChange #WaterCrisis #BlueEconomy #DikkoandMahmoud

Water security and climate-resilient sanitation are the bedrock for Africa’s economic growth, social cohesion, joint prosperity, and ultimately – peace. The quote below is sourced from the Africa Rising Investment Tide report published one year ago at the United Nations 2023 Water Conference by the African Union Commission and the International High-Level Panel on Water Investments for Africa. One common approach to improve rural #watersafety is to build new laboratories to promote decentralized water testing. But sometimes centralized testing, or outsourcing to existing labs, is the most #costeffective. In this publication👇 , we compare the costs of 4 different water testing models and discuss when the different models make the most sense. #SpoilerAlert: Centralized testing was the lowest cost in widest variety of simulations and 2/3 of our real-world scenarios in #Uganda 🇺🇬 and #Ghana 🇬🇭 . Other models were more cost-effective in certain contexts, particularly when testing sites were very far from centralized labs.
📚 New peer-reviewed publication: What are the costs of water quality monitoring in rural Africa? Rural water systems in #Africa can enhance water quality monitoring. However, the most cost-effective method for microbial water testing remains uncertain. Aquaya compared four different approaches representing different levels of centralization: 🔬 one centralized laboratory serving all water systems, 🔬 a mobile laboratory serving all systems, 🔬 multiple semi-centralized laboratories serving clusters of systems and 🔬 decentralized analysis at each system. Our program partner KEWASNET last week convened a 2-day technical working group with key stakeholders in the water sector to discuss critical issues around water governance and accountability in the counties. Led by KEWASNET CEO, Malesi Shivaji, the group emphasized the ongoing struggle Kenyans face in accessing clean water services, despite substantial budget allocations over the years. The stakeholders called on county governments to prioritize the effective implementation of water services and urged the inclusion of stakeholders in the planning and execution of water projects from the very start to ensure ownership and sustainability. https://lnkd.in/dPwUrb8s Partnership for African Social & Governance Research (PASGR) Centre For Social Planning And Administrative Development (CESPAD) Kenya Water for Health Organization Government Of Makueni County #AfricanCivilSocietyNetworkonWaterandSanitation Big Five Africa Ltd(BfA) Simavi WWF-Kenya #KajiadoYouthWaterParliament #KakamegaYouthWaterParliament #KwaleYouthWaterParliament WASREB KENYA African Population and Health Research Center #VihigaCountyGovernment Aqua Clara Kenya COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF MARSABIT County Government of Turkana #KajiadoCountyGovernment Water Resources Authority (WRA) #InstituteOfEnvironmentAndWaterManagement Sanivation #AccountabilityForWater #WaterGovernance #WASHForAll

🔬 📊 Did you know? Most water systems evaluated in this new #REALwater baseline assessment in Kenya did not perform adequate chlorination and water often had microbial contamination at the point of collection and at the point of use. Read the report to get details of the baseline findings and implications. In efforts to evaluate the effect of the Water Quality Assurance Fund across diverse contexts in Africa, and explore how efficiently existing professional water quality laboratories can expand their water testing services to rural water supplies, this report describes the baseline status of community-managed water systems in rural Kenya, prior to their enrollment in the Assurance Fund program. The pace of soil degradation is a salient threat to African security; it is like an internal implosion with the potential to create a huge harm, if not halted. I think it should be treated with all the seriousness it deserves “like a national security issue.” Policy enforcement, investment, and mobilization of civil society are urgently needed. Implementing the Soil Initiative for Africa (SIA) and the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan (AFSH-AP) is seriously on my mind.

A threat to the soil is a threat to life. Prof 'Wole Fatunbi you can count on me when you need additional technical hands on the implementation of SIA and AFSH-AP

📢 🌍 We have signed contracts for two new exciting projects in Moldova: The 𝗔𝗽𝗮𝗦𝗮𝗻𝟮𝟴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 project is a new initiative aimed at improving water and sanitation in rural Moldova, set to be completed in 2028 (hence the name ApaSan𝟮𝟴). Building on the successes of previous ApaSan projects, this new initiative funded with EUR 6 million by the Austrian Development Agency will enhance access to safe drinking water and sustainable decentralised sanitation systems and strengthen the capacity of operators and municipalities. The project for 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗮 will support communities in Moldova to cope with the additional challenges resulting from the crisis caused by the Russian invasion in Ukraine, such as stress on water supply systems from increasing population and and soaring energy costs affecting budgets of municipalities and people. The project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation with CHF 2.7 million as an additional component to our long-term local governance project 𝗠𝗮 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰 (https://ma-implic.md/en/). #SafeDrinkingWater #WaterSupply #sanitation #governance #Moldova #SkatConsulting
