These programs, developed throughout 2023/24, are designed to equip students with the STEM skills they’ll need to thrive in the emerging hydrogen industry. A new report released on Tuesday by the First Nations Clean Energy Network has found the transition to clean energy will require the development of a skilled workforce - creating new career opportunities for First Nations people. The report, launched with the Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen, outlines 12 actionable steps to boost Indigenous employment within the sector. Some key recommendations include; setting employment targets, creating apprenticeship schemes, and ensuring culturally appropriate training. We are getting closer to a 100% clean energy future while increasing economic opportunities in lower-income communities.

NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs adjunct instructor Michael Shank, Ph.D. recently wrote an insightful piece for Fast Company on "4 lessons from Melbourne on how cities can build neighborhood batteries that people love." This piece addresses how Melbourne approaches the process of transitioning to renewable energy as one of community building and collaboration. Employing a wide array of approaches—including creative animations, individual surveys, community champions, and cross-council collaboration with neighboring cities—this multiyear effort illustrates how serious the city is about building public and political will for this work, and its success can be an example for other cities looking to do the same thing. Maximum Award: $200,000 Grant up to 50%* of eligible costs Application Deadline: February 21, 2025.   Eligible Organizations: -Canadian municipal governments (e.g., towns, cities, regions, districts, and local boards) -Municipally owned corporations (e.g., a municipal utility) -An Indigenous community is an eligible lead applicant if they are partnering with a Canadian municipal government on an eligible project, or if they have a shared service agreement with a Canadian municipal government related to municipal infrastructure, climate change or adaptation. Expected Output: A study that identifies opportunity areas for low-carbon community energy systems (including renewable and district energy systems) within your community and develops mechanisms to support implementation.

With new regulations, an influx of climate funds and gas & water infrastructure reaching end of life, municipalities especially in New York State have a lot of potential to be apart of the thermal energy network/district energy space but it requires partnering with the private sector, the non profit sector and most importantly, the community. ******************************************************************************** My work as a former NYSERDA Clean Energy Intern at the City of Albany, New York was of interest to a few a people so my report is now posted on my site. (Inspired by my recent attendance at the Cornell Sustainability Leadership Summit on Oct 20th!) Extremely happy to share my dear friend and colleague, Carol Ziegler, NP-C, APHN-BC, DNP's most recent co-authored research publication: "Mobilizing carbon offsetting to reduce energy cost burdens: a new approach for calculating and monetizing the offset value of energy efficiency upgrades to low-income housing"!

The #IRA has created over 330k jobs and counting, 75% of which won’t require a 4-year degree. In addition, clean energy jobs grew at twice the rate of overall US employment in 2023 and can result in an 8-19% income increase.   And states and cities are primed for even more clean energy jobs, especially if they pursue the industries most feasible for their region. The Clean Growth Tool shows every metro area in the US which clean energy industries are most likely to thrive there, and where workforce gaps exist. https://lnkd.in/ew_Kk8YQ   But who will fill those jobs? This is where workforce development, training, and apprenticeship programs come in that can train skilled workers in these growing industries, and why the US Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of governors, just announced a commitment to support 1 million workers in completing Registered Apprenticeships by 2035, aiming to catalyze a diverse workforce and expand career pathways.   By bringing all these elements together and aligning clean energy goals with workforce strategies, policymakers and economic development organizations can attract investment and create jobs, workers can develop stable career pathways and transform their lives, and clean energy project developers can utilize more federal incentives, allowing clean energy to be deployed faster.   To learn more about why workforce programs are so important and why a cohesive strategy to align goals can maximize benefits, check out our latest article: https://lnkd.in/eBMtmZ58
