#ICYMI Cheap fixes could help 450m people stand taller and think quicker Eat right, start young The Economist highlights the irreversible physical and cognitive damage in children caused by #malnutrition in the critical 1000 days after birth. 🌍 Globally, 22% of children under five are stunted. 🧑🧒🧒 While stunting rates may have fallen, the absolute number of children stunted has increased, as birth rates continue to increase especially in low-income countries. 💻 Their analysis shows that doubling the pace at which stunting rates are currently falling could help bring the figure down to just 4% by 2050. 🥕 Reducing malnutrition could help 450m children approach their full potential both physically and cognitively. 💡 #foodfortification, #supplementation, nutrient-enriched foods, #education, and counseling are all effective methods to improve #micronutrient malnutrition. 💔 The Hidden Toll of Malnutrition Malnutrition impacts every system in the body, leaving children and families vulnerable to life-altering complications—and in extreme cases, even death. Here's how it affects the body: 🛡 Immune System: Reduced ability to fight infections. 💪 Muscles: Weakness, inactivity, and increased risk of pressure ulcers and blood clots. 🌬 Respiratory System: Difficulty coughing, increasing the risk of chest infections and pneumonia. ❤️ Heart: Impaired wound healing and heart failure. 💧 Kidneys: Difficulty regulating salt and fluids, leading to dehydration or overhydration. 🧠 Brain: Apathy, depression, social withdrawal, and impaired mental health. 👶 Reproduction: Reduced fertility, and for pregnant women, increased risks of chronic illness in babies. ❄ Temperature Regulation: Increased vulnerability to hypothermia. This is why Virreyes Rugby Club, with support from The Atlas Foundation, provides meals, healthcare, and education to tackle malnutrition in Buenos Aires' vulnerable communities. 📢 Stay informed and donate today https://lnkd.in/eUTP6tBB #MalnutritionAwareness #AtlasFoundation #VirreyesRugbyClub #HealthForAll

Obesity is officially a bigger problem than hunger when it comes to malnutrition as of the newest February 2024 Lancet study. Overabundance as a disease is not restricted to diet. So many of our ailments in human history have flipped around. Instead of people suffering from dangerous physical labour and overexertion, we are now dying from sedentary lifestyles. Instead of people dying from a lack of education on topics like basic hygiene, we now suffer anxiety from the overstimulation of information in phones. Instead of people suffering exposure to extreme weather events, we are now suffering from too much screentime and time spent indoors. Audit your own life and see where an overabundance of comforts and cheap convenience exists. I guarantee you that bringing back some hardship into those areas will make you healthier and more resilient.

Did you know that malnutrition can have long-lasting effects on a child’s health, growth, and development? A shocking 15,000 children were hospitalised last year due to severe acute malnutrition. This crisis takes a toll on our future generation, and it’s critical we address it now. It’s crucial to understand the four main indicators: 👶 Stunting: Low height-for-age, often resulting from chronic or recurrent undernutrition. It is linked to poor socioeconomic conditions, inadequate maternal health and nutrition, frequent illnesses, and poor feeding practices. Stunting can hinder physical and cognitive development. ⚖️ Wasting: Low weight-for-height, typically caused by recent and severe weight loss due to insufficient food intake or infectious diseases like diarrhoea. Children with wasting are at a higher risk of death, but treatment is possible. ⚖️ Overweight: A condition where a person is too heavy for their height due to excessive fat accumulation. It is measured by Body Mass Index (BMI), with a BMI of 25 or more considered overweight in adults. 📉 Underweight: Low weight-for-age, which may be a result of stunting, wasting, or both. Underweight individuals, particularly children, are more vulnerable to disease and death. Malnutrition is preventable, but we have to speak up. Don’t let silence be the reason children continue to suffer. Take action to protect our children’s health—together. #16days #malnutrition #silence #childhealth #speakup #dontletyoursilencesoundthesirens

As we marked the #DayofTheAfricanChild on June 16, it reminded us of the critical importance of our children's health. Industrially produced trans fats pose a serious threat to our children and many children are unknowingly consuming these harmful fats in their diets. Trans Fats are a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and stroke. They have no known nutritional benefits and there is no amount that is safe. We continue to urge East African Community Policy Makers to take decisive action through implementing a regional regulation that will limit the presence of industrially produced trans fats in our food. This will protect our children's health and ensure a healthier future for them. The health of our children is non-negotiable! It's time to regulate trans fats in the EAC. . . . #TransFatFreeKenya #TransFatFreeEAC

1 in 5 older adults with severe periodontal disease are at risk of #malnutrition. https://lnkd.in/gJ_kEgVA Poor oral health has consequences. It brings on #frailty, #sarcopenia and #anorexia of aging simply because chewing good food is difficult. So how do we treat chronic oral inflammation in our aging communities? Treat the bacteria causing the problem. Topically, without discomfort, in the seniors' centre or LTC, in 10 minutes without any aerosols or equipment. Use #Prevora. Because it is considered by older adults to be very important, very acceptable and very beneficial to overall health.
