They are found in almost everything that we buy, use, eat and drink, and are a vital part of the manufacturing base, with more than 96% of all manufactured products in the UK containing inputs from the chemicals industry.⚗️⚗️ You'll hear about how: 🌍By 2050, the UK chemicals industry will have doubled economic output, but will significantly lower its GHG emissions, sourcing 80% of its carbon requirements from non-virgin #fossil, sustainable carbon sources. 🧪Sustainable chemicals, manufactured using sustainable carbon, displace gas- and oil-derived chemicals, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of everyday essentials like skin creams, nail polish, household cleaners, paints, medications, vitamins, and more. ⚗️If we want to continue living our lives in the same way, but in a more sustainable manner, then we must completely change the way chemicals are produced and/ or ensure that the inputs used in their production are more sustainable. COCONUT HUSK-DERIVED CARBON FOR SUPERCAPACITORS Why in the news? Researchers at the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, developed a method to produce activated carbon from coconut husks for supercapacitors. This eco-friendly and cost-effective method could revolutionize sustainable energy storage solutions. Source: TH What is Activated Carbon? Activated carbon is a processed form of carbon with small, low-volume pores that increase surface area for adsorption or chemical reactions. It is widely used in water purification, air filtration, and as a catalyst support. Key Findings The activated carbon derived from coconut husks shows promise for high-performance super capacitors due to its availability and low cost. Prototype supercapacitors using this material are four times more efficient than existing ones. Understanding Supercapacitor: A supercapacitor, or ultracapacitor, is an electrochemical charge storage device that offers high-power density, long durability, and ultrafast charging capabilities, outperforming conventional capacitors and lithium-ion batteries. It comprises electrodes, electrolytes, separators, and current collectors. "De-follilize" is the new buzz word, but what does it really mean? As the energy transition unfolds and industries are electrified, we will see the supply of fossil-based raw material inputs dwindle. However, the world will still need carbon to make chemicals, plastics, and other physical goods. Progress has been slow to date: Companies fear that if they scale renewable routes too early, they will be at a disadvantage, especially if there are no supporting policies in place nor markets developed for more novel products. However, if companies act too late, they could miss out on the growing demand for more sustainable products or an alternative pathway that proves superior. Ultimately, how should companies be thinking about these different pathways to chemicals? If the raw material inputs change, will the product outputs change as well? And when should companies engage with emerging solutions?  This event will address these questions and provide a framework for making decisions around a defossilized future. 🌱 Reflections from the European Bioplastics Conference 2024 (EBC24) 🌱 What an incredible experience reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones at EBC24! This year’s conference truly showcased the resilience and innovation of the global bioplastics community. With over 350 attendees, 50 speakers, and 53 exhibitors, it was inspiring to see the energy and collaboration shaping the future of sustainable plastics. Here are my takeaways from EBC24: 1. Consumer Awareness: The growth in bioplastics is heavily influenced by increasing consumer demand for environmentally friendly alternatives. 2. Steady Growth on Capacity: Bioplastics production capacity is projected to more than double, from 2.47 million tons in 2024 to 5.73 million tons by 2029. 3. Scaling Challenges: Current production at 60% of capacity highlights both the potential for growth and the need for policy and market alignment to optimize utilization. 4. Market Expansion: Bioplastics are being adopted across diverse industries, including fibers, consumer goods, automotive, and agriculture, reflecting their versatility. 5. Policy Momentum: European regulations are driving compostable and biobased plastic adoption. 6. Environmental Impact: Bioplastics, such as PLA and PHA, are integral to reducing plastic pollution in soil and oceans, aligning with EU bioeconomy goals. 7. Strategic Biomass Use: Managing biomass resources is crucial for scaling bioplastics sustainably. 8. Industry Collaboration: Partnerships among manufacturers, policymakers, and researchers are accelerating progress in bioplastics technologies and applications. 9. Global Perspectives: Key insights from the USA, the Middle East, and China emphasized the global push toward bioplastics. 🌍The World Economic Forum Net Zero Industry Tracker from 2024 is out now. Sharing here the excerpt on Primary Chemicals. 🧪 📑The report done in collaboration with Accenture states: To reduce emissions, the industry must prioritize CCUS, energy efficiency and plastics recycling now, while advancing electrification, fuel shifts, bio-based feedstocks and hydrogen for lasting impact. 3 Performance tracker highlights: > The absolute emissions for primary chemicals has seen 6% rise in the 2019-2023 period, driven by an increase in demand for ammonia by 4%, methanol by 19% and high-value chemicals by 9%. > Low emission production accounted for only 2% of the total emission production worldwide in 2022. Only 8% of current plastic production is through recycling. > Current infrastructure stands at less than 1% for CCUS, clean power and hydrogen of the required infrastructure capacity by 2050 for net-zero emissions. The report identified 3 key mitigation methods: 1. Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCUS): Expected to reduce emissions by 37% 2. Circularity & Recycling: Expected to reduce emissions by 23% 3. Clean Hydrogen: Expected to reduce emissions by 19% At the Global Impact Coalition we are working on projects specifically looking at Circularity and Carbon Capture & Utilization.
