There is a lot to be learned from team sports in the business world. Which is why it is great for kids to play sports. For example, football. What does it take to win? Dedicated players who are in it to win (ethically) for the team, not just for personal glory. Relentless practice (which is often overlooked in business). Hard working, smart coaches who know how to draw up a winning plan vs. the competition and utilize their players to benefit the team. Do this in business and you will win. Business is a team game. I’ve often thought about how my experiences in a rugby team directly translate to life in business. Rob Cann wrote a pretty good post about it a few months ago and I was reminded of it today (link in the comments). There is no room for ego on the rugby pitch, and arguably the same can be said for business. Often decisions will be made that are for the greater good and even though your role may change it is no less important than the one you had before. Don’t get me wrong, it can feel pretty brutal in the instant that decision is made, and primal response may well be wanting to make arguments to the contrary. However, if you allow your slow-thinking brain to kick in, you will remember that this is all part of the game. Moves are made, tactics are employed and all to make sure the end goal is achieved. Park that ego at the door, remember the end game and the part you are playing, and get the job done. #NoRoomForEgos #BiggerPicture #TeamSport #Purpose

Plan A isn’t the most important…. It’s all about Plan B. This is correct in many walks of life, think football for example. 12 months ago both Hamilton and Dumbarton had plans and aspirations of winning their respective leagues, but it wasn’t to be. Now whatever the reasons, bad luck, injuries, things not quite clicking - they both find themselves not fulfilling plan A - time to move on to plan B! The end result of promotion is the same but you have to be focused, have the ability to look at the bigger picture, and the drive and determination to play on beyond the league end to get the end result. Both teams done this fantastically and have now found themselves exactly where they want to be! It’s a lesson, an outlook, a set of skills that can be used in many walks of life!
