🌍 Interesting Fact: 🌍 Approximately 80% of marine debris is plastic waste, contaminating our oceans from the surface to deep-sea sediments. However, waste pickers are crucial in addressing this environmental crisis. In developing nations, they collect around 60% of plastic waste, thereby preventing plastics from entering our oceans and safeguarding marine life. Let's acknowledge the significant impact of waste pickers in constructing a more sustainable future! At TakaNiAjira Foundation, we are dedicated to amplifying the voices of waste pickers and backing their endeavors in environmental conservation. Join us in supporting waste pickers and preserving our environment. 🔗 www.takaniajira.org 📧 info@takaniajira.org #TakaNiAjira #WastePickers #PlasticPollution #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #ClimateAction #SupportWastePickers

Marine pollution is caused by all the substances discharged into seas and oceans due to human activities. It reaches marine environments through rivers, winds, the air, or through direct discharges into the sea. Today, we are all impacted and concerned...therefore, we must take action and implement concrete, sustainable measures tailored to local contexts... RE-SWEEP is working on several strategic and projects to prevent and reduce marine pollution from waste, particularly plastic waste in the Mediterranean... The projects are carried out in partnership with public institutions, the private sector, NGOs, and researchers... #Marine_Litter #Circular_Economy #Plastics #Policy #Field_work

The world’s oceans are currently facing an unprecedented environmental crisis, with an estimated 8-10 million metric tons of plastic waste entering marine ecosystems each year. This pollution, combined with chemical contaminants and other harmful substances, is causing extensive damage to marine biodiversity. These pollutants not only endanger marine life but also jeopardize critical economic sectors such as fisheries, tourism, and global shipping, leading to economic damages estimated in the trillions of dollars annually. However, it’s not too late to act. Strategic and comprehensive approaches such as reducing plastic production, enhancing waste management, and promoting sustainable practices are essential for safeguarding our oceans and sustaining marine-based economies. Swipe through to learn more about the state of our oceans and the critical steps we must take to protect them. #OceanPollution #SustainableDevelopment #PlasticPollution #SustainableFuture #EnvironmentProtection

World Oceans Day!🌊 Plastic pollution is the most rapidly escalating environmental problem globally, and without new effective measures, it will almost double in the next 20 years. Norway calls for an ambitious global agreement against plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. Tackling marine litter and microplastics is not going to be easy. But there are some success stories out there. A new report showcases projects supported by Norway that make real impact to combat litter 🌊💪 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dfHvY8wU #WorldOceansDay #OceanConservation #PlasticFreeSeas 📷: WWF

Let's work together to protect our marine environment! Preserving and restoring our oceans and marine ecosystems is crucial, and we can all make a difference by taking targeted actions and implementing policies that help conserve our marine environment. Here are some effective strategies to get started: 1. Minimize Plastic Use: Reduce single-use plastics and advocate for banning or regulating plastic products. 2. Proper Waste Disposal: Ensure proper disposal of waste, especially hazardous materials. 3. Sustainable Seafood Choices: Choose sustainably sourced seafood and support environmentally friendly practices. 4. Reduce Chemical Use: Use eco-friendly household and garden products to prevent harmful chemicals from entering water bodies. 5. Protect Coral Reefs: Be cautious during diving or snorkeling activities and use reef-safe sunscreen. 6. Support Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): Advocate for the creation and enforcement of MPAs to protect marine life and habitats. 7. Reduce Carbon Footprint: Embrace renewable energy sources and support policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 8. Conserve Water: Limiting water consumption can reduce the amount of pollutants and contaminants entering the ocean. 9. Educate and Advocate: Raise awareness about the importance of the marine environment and support policies designed to protect it. 10. Support Conservation Efforts: Financially support or volunteer for organizations dedicated to marine conservation. 11. Participate in Citizen Science: Engage in citizen science projects focused on gathering marine life and ocean health data. 12. Responsible Boating Practices: Follow guidelines to minimize the impact of boating activities on the marine environment. 13. Reduce Noise Pollution: Advocate for measures to reduce noise pollution from ships, which can disrupt marine life. Remember, we all have a role in protecting our marine environment. Let's take action today! #Environment

2.4 tons of fishing nets recycled in 2023 This year, we’ve ramped up our efforts to combat the staggering amount of plastic waste in our oceans, particularly in Mozambique, where an estimated 10,000 tons of fishing nets are discarded annually. By recycling these nets, we’re not only giving this material a second chance but also taking a crucial step toward protecting marine ecosystems and supporting sustainable livelihoods in coastal communities. Our mission to create cleaner oceans and a healthier planet is gaining momentum, and we’re just getting started. #BioMec #petbottles #plasticwaste #biomecprosthetics #biomecwheelchairs #plasticwastesolutions #CircularEconomy #SustainableDesign #OceanPlastic #ImpactfulDesign

A warm welcome to our newest partner, Partenariat français pour les déchets / French Solid Waste Partnership! Congratulations to them and their partners on the publication of the 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 & 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. 📖 This handbook offers vital decision-support tools for implementing effective, on-the-ground measures to tackle pollution (from plastic and waste) in aquatic environments—from #Source2Sea, drawing on real-world examples from diverse territories and cross-border catchment areas worldwide. 🌍 Its goal is to evaluate waste and plastic management in relation to waterways, characterize and quantify pollution, and measure its impact on aquatic ecosystems. By identifying pollution sources, tracking how pollution enters river systems, and offering recommendations for interception and prevention, this resource will be invaluable in protecting our waterways and ecosystems from #Source2Sea! 🌊💧
[Publication zoom] What are the wastes found in the aquatic environment? 🔔 Plastic pollution of water will only stop increasing if waste is collected and treated worldwide. The International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO/RIOB) and its partners, the Partenariat français pour les déchets / French Solid Waste Partnership, the ISWA International Solid Waste Association and the AFD - Agence Française de Développement, have worked together to draw up the Handbook on the Transfer of waste and plastics in aquatic environments. Those “handbook focus post” aims to dig more into several question around the impact of macro-waste on the aquatic environment and at the end on human health. #Wastemanagement #waterpollution #plasticwaste
