We're excited to announce the First International Deltas Summit that will be held at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand from the 17th to 20th March, 2025. The key aim of the summit is to produce an underpinning white paper in support of a new United Nations Convention for Conserving River Deltas (UNCCRD). Living Deltas and Geography at Newcastle University has been integral in establishing this summit and its programme, with the express aim of elevating delta community voices and encouraging a 'bottom-up' approach to shaping the white paper, and ultimately the convention. There are bursaries available for Early Career Researchers and for local practitioners and NGOs.

We usually connect #oceanliteracy with natural sciences but it is so much more than that! Recent focus in OL is moving towards marine social science and behavioural change. Art has also an important role in this. There is still time to submit an abstract and share your stories, good practice, research data and much more. Submit your abstract by May 15th!

📣 Exciting news!! GEO’s Emmanuel Akwasi Adu-Ampong has been awarded an European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant of €1.5 million euros for his 5-year research project called FRICTIONS. The aim of FRICTIONS is to unravel the extent to which tourism transforms the past of slavery and colonial heritage and the frictions generated. It also looks at how these frictions are scaled up to provoke shifts in cultural memories and the societal narratives about dealing with this shared past in the present. FRICTIONS builds on insights from Emmanuel’s NWO (Dutch Research Council) funded Veni research project (The embodied absence of the past). 📢 IOC-UNESCO, the EurOcean Foundation, and Portugal launched the 2nd edition of the Mário Ruivo Memorial Lecture Series, inviting ECOPs to showcase their groundbreaking projects. This initiative celebrates the legacy of Professor Mário Ruivo, former Executive Secretary of UNESCO-IOC and one of Portugal’s most influential champions of ocean science and sustainability. The second edition will culminate in the selected ECOP delivering a keynote lecture on their project during the IOC Assembly in 2025, as part of this prestigious series. This lecture will continue to pay tribute to Professor Ruivo’s groundbreaking contributions to ocean governance and sustainability, while amplifying the voices of the next generation of ocean scientists and leaders. 📍 Applications are open to ECOPs, born in 1984 or later, who are leading projects as principal investigators (PI) or co-PIs. 📅 YESI International Fellows Seminar: The production of urban space in Amazonas state, Brazil (4 July, 1pm to 2pm, Environment Building) Join YESI's International Fellows Seminar with Dr Paola Verri de Santana, from the Department of Geography, Universidade Federal do Amazonas (Federal University of Amazonas - UFAM). This seminar will focus on the city of Manaus, an urban space that has also been produced through industrialization, promoted and articulated locally and worldwide. We are in the midst of a global environmental crisis, but under conditions of uneven development. These conditions manifest themselves in several ways, one of which is through precarious urban infrastructure, such as energy and health services. Here we are, already three years passed since the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) ! And to celebrate the ‘Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want’, the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will bring together the Ocean Decade community and partners. From the 10th to the12th of April 2024, all involved in the Ocean Decade will present achievements and will set joint priorities for the future of the Decade. It will take place in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. As chair of the European Marine Board, I would like to invite you to one of the satellite event : "Supporting a global collective vision for ocean science by matching regional priorities" which will be held in the Baltic Sea Room (122+123) at the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) from 8:30 am to 9:45 am on the 11th. The subject to be discussed during the event is focused on Regional structures playing a key role in guiding activities to support the achievement of the global Ocean Decade Challenges. For the first time since the start of the Ocean Decade, different regional ocean science organisations and initiatives (European Marine Board, IOCAFRICA, IOC-WESTPAC, IOCARIBE, IOCINDIO, and the Southern and Arctic Ocean Task Forces) will present their research priorities for the end of the decade, providing the pieces of the puzzle of the global ocean. The discussion will focus on matching, comparing and finding synergies between these priorities with the Ocean Decade Vision 2030 and finding avenues for future regional collaboration to deliver this vision.
