Happy International Womens Day to all you lovely ladies from the boss babes of Normedica. Today is all about you and the work that women have done over the years to give you the opportunities that you now have. Its a sisterhood that spans decades! In amongst the recognition of these amazing achievements and giving yourselves a pat on the back for being fabulous women, we need to remember that for many, there is still a long way to go. If you are posting on social media today about it, why not use that platform. Don't just shout about how amazing women are, but also highlight one of the many injustices and cruelties that women and girls still face around the world today. This is your opportunity to shed some light and hopefully encourage people to demand change. For us, one of the big things that we never talk about and that still goes on in shocking numbers around the world is FGM. Its a massively uncomfortable subject and one that a crazy amount of people haven't even heard of. The impact of this practice is not only fundamentally dangerous and brutal, but also leaves damage that affects the rest of the victims lives. The girls affected can be as young as 8 years old. When I was a young girl, my biggest fear was sitting for KCPE when menstruating. Yesterday, the 28th day of the 5th month of the year symbolizing the 5 average days in a cycle of averagely 28 days that women and girls go through, I was so honored to have been invited to speak about Menstrual hygiene and the work that #CommunityVoices does at Pearl Radio. Key recommendations from the discussions were; 1. The need for comprehensive advocacy on menstrual health including access to safe and dignified products, education and knowledge on menstruation and proper disposal of menstrual products. 2. Their is a need for policies at the national level, workplaces, and schools that support girls to experience a dignified menstruation eradicating stereotypes that promote shame and stigma. 3. Sanitary towels should not be left to charity programs, the government should be held into account for its provision through schools and health facilities. Access to safe and dignified menstruation is a right, not a previlege 4. Menstrual Awareness should be accompanied with environmental conservation messages. #CommunityVoices #MHM2024
