41% of adults and 95% of content creators have faced some type of online harassment. (Avast, 2024). Rightly said in this carousel, reporting perpetrators or harmful statements seldom yields any results, all one gets is the option to block the offender. Meanwhile, the hate continues to fuel more hate. So no, it's never just a joke—whether it targets an individual, a community, or an entire race! What can #we as individuals do, especially when interacting with hateful posts can sometimes unintentionally boost their visibility due to how algorithms prioritize engagement, giving offenders the publicity they're after. There are some thoughtful ways to address this concern while still taking a stand against online harassment: 🛡️ Don't like, comment, or share posts with harmful or offensive content. Screenshot and report instead. 👑 If this is a negative comment targeting an individual, support the victim by commenting supportive messages on their posts, amplify their positive content, or engage with their work to counteract negativity. 📣 Create posts or discussions like this one about the larger issue without spotlighting specific hateful individuals. 🔕 Use features like "mute" or "restrict" rather than blocking outright (unless necessary). Muting prevents the algorithm from detecting ongoing interaction. ⚖️ Advocate for better algorithmic practices that prioritize quality content over sheer engagement. Encourage platforms to deprioritize harmful content by flagging and providing feedback. The key is to shift the focus away from the perpetrator and their content while addressing the issue at large.

In July, we observe #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth to raise awareness about mental health challenges that are unique and specific to racial and ethnic minority groups. We also aim to increase awareness of mental health issues and resources among minority groups. According to studies by the Intercultural Development Research Association, youth of color are at a higher risk of experiencing bullying and harassment. This may be due to discriminatory behavior where individuals or groups are targeted due to their identities. We stand against all forms of bullying and harassment and work to create a kinder, more compassionate world. #TylerClementiFoundation #TylerClementi #Upstander #Upstanders #UpstandersNotBystanders #UpstanderNotBystander #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #UpstanderBehavior #BeAnUpstander #BeAnUpstanderNotABystander
