Australia’s clothing product stewardship scheme Seamless released new clothing benchmark research that reveals that while individual organisations are making progress, and Australians are starting to change their buying behaviour, systemic change is urgently needed to address clothing waste, which can only happen when government, clothing brands, retailers and the industry join forces. The Volte CEO and co-founder Bernadette Olivier joined leaders from across the industry at the Seamless Circular Economy Showcase at NSW Parliament. “We really need to make fashion be seen as an asset. It's about utilisation, because the single biggest thing that we can do is actually use our clothes more,” says Bernadette. “Our API encourages more people to use the circular economy meaning high quality fashion remains in circulation for longer reducing our fashion consumption and textile waste. The fashion industry can be transformed back into a profitable and sustainable industry. Through our Digital IDs, fashion items are tracked every time they are rented or resold. This gives brands access to data post sale - which until now has largely been completely unknown. With over 60 leading brands like Big W, Cotton On, David Jones, and THE ICONIC on board, Seamless aims to create a circular economy for clothing. What's been happening in sustainable fashion this week? ⬇ 1) Better Cotton dominates the 'preferred cotton' sourcing route, representing around 21% of all cotton production in 2022 (Textile Exchange) - but most people didn't realise it was never actually a certification, and it's sustainability credentials have been questionable in the industry 🤔 . After much controversy and investigations, Better Cotton is set to become an externally verified certification scheme (if approved) to meet demands of EU legislation. 2) The H&M Foundation has linked up with HKRITA - The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel Limited to open a research lab called 'Open Lab' - a facility set to become a hub for sustainable innovation focusing on industry wide collaboration. H&M and Inditex have also announced investment in US cellular agriculture start-up GALY, who are working to develop lab-grown cotton. 3) Polarn O. Pyret have opened a 'Used & Loved' pop-up store in Stockholm - open until the end of October. PO.P also launched 'PO.P Reclaimed' - a collection using left over fabrics to minimise waste. 4) Primark is set to launch its first ever 'Swap-Shop' initiative in partnership with Verte, in select Primark stores across the UK during London Fashion Week. Primark have also announced they are new patrons of The British Fashion Council - as they celebrate 50 years on the British High Street (who knew the first UK store opened in Derby in 1974?) 5) United Repair Centre centre have collaborated CP CLOTHING LTD, the Italian sportswear brand, to create 'The Longevity Hub' - C.P's company platform dedicated to extending the life of its products. 6) Seasalt is the latest British brand to join B Corp movement and has been awared 100.2 points by B Lab UK, more than 20 points over the minimum required to be certified. 7) AllSaints have launched 'All Saints Rental' , powered by ACS (Advanced Clothing Solutions). The subscription service offers customers 2 styles at a time for £79 per month which you can wear as much as you like, or receive a discount off the RRP if you choose to keep. 8) Patagonia have joined Canopy 'Pack4Good' initiative to scale sustainable packaging and protect ancient and endangered forests. Products include a natural, vegan bug repellent and a reef-safe, all-natural, SPF50 sunscreen in a sustainable stick in plastic-free packaging. 👟Vibram Group’s CVT-Hemp Men's Khaki is a casual minimalist shoe using a hemp / poly blend designed to slip on as a shoe or fold back as a clog. 👜Rothy's Espadrille is knit with a blend of hemp and Rothy’s signature thread, spun from plastic bottles. At its end of life, consumers can return it to any of Rothy's stores to recycle it. Its RS01 sneaker is machjine washable using natural and recycled materials. 🩱Perfect Moment bathing suits use Carvico, a high-tech, high-performance Italian fabric, made with UV protection, all from a sustainable production chain. And in the wings The LYCRA Company and Qore LLC are betting on Iowa corn and Geocell is introducing Geocell white, a natural rubber alternative to neoprene opening up design choices. There are no shortage of options to drive sustainability forward but connecting the dots for the consumer will be critical to making progress.

Incase you missed it, here's the latest weekly Sustainable Fashion insights from Lydia Brearley at Enkel ⬇ 1) Last week saw ASOS.com, Boohoo Group PLC and Asda agree to file regular reports to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to ensure that their claims are substantiated and not misleading customers. 2) Back in August 2022, Copenhagen Fashion Week banned fur, and now it has introduced a policy to ban feathers and exotic skins as of next years run-ways. 3) In other material news, adidas have developed a new range of stretch performance garments which use innovative knits or woven construction, called TWISTKNIT / TWISTWEAVE. The twisted yarns create springs within the fabric structure which alleviate the need for synthetic derived elastane. 4) H&M have released their latest annual sustainability report 2023, which reportedly show a 22% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the H&M Group supply chain. Other highlights include 85% recycled or sustainably sourced materials, making progress towards their goal of 100% by 2030. 5) Pakistan's largest vertically integrated denim company Soorty Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. has set up an initiative that promotes regenerative farming practices to reduce the environmental impact of its cotton in its denim supply chain. 6) Still talking supply chains, a latest report from Planet Tracker unveils the water-related risks confronting major fashion brands and retailers which will impact profits. The report urges companies and investors to prioritise water risk management for long term sustainability. Workwear is notoriously difficult to recycle, and as it is worn 'on repeat', it generally cannot be resold in the same way fashion is. Reskinned will responsibly recycle, so if you have workwear in your business and don't have a waste solution, get in touch with Matt Hanrahan. 8) Finally for this week, Sizekick, the Munich based start up specialising in AI-driven size recommendations for online fashion retailers, has announced its latest partnership with Stockholm based activewear brand STRONGER. Did you know the average American throws away 80 pounds of clothing each year? 🗑️ France's new bill could signal a global turning point against ultra-fast fashion targeting companies like Shein with penalties and seeks to curb their environmental impact. Here's what you need to know: 🇫🇷 The lower French house of parliament approved a bill to curb "ephemeral fashion" with penalties on ultra-fast fashion items and advertising restrictions. This aims to reduce the volume of low-cost, disposable clothing flooding the market. 👕 The Problem: Ultra-fast fashion disrupts the market, influences impulsive buying, and generates huge environmental costs (up to 10% of global carbon emissions!). This model relies on rapid production, low prices, and trend-driven marketing to encourage frequent purchases. 📝 Here's what's in the bill 💶 Gradual penalties on individual items, up to €10 by 2030: This surcharge is meant to disincentivize production and sale of the most environmentally harmful fast fashion items. 🚫 Potential ban on advertising the most inexpensive products: This aims to reduce the promotion of the cheapest and likely most unsustainable clothing options. 🔍 Producers must disclose environmental impact for consumer awareness: This transparency forces companies to quantify the impact of their products, potentially influencing consumer choices. ♻️ Revenue from penalties will support sustainable fashion brands: This creates a funding mechanism to support brands working to reduce textile waste and promote environmentally conscious production methods. So, how are folks reacting? 👍 Supporters see it as a major step toward reducing textile waste and pollution. They argue this levels the playing field for sustainable brands. 👎 Fast Fashion companies argue it will hurt consumers during a cost-of-living crisis. They claim this places the burden on consumers rather than addressing core issues of overproduction. My Take: Why I'm Optimistic (but Skeptical) 💚 Optimistic: This puts the environmental cost of fast fashion into the spotlight, potentially changing consumer behavior. It signals that unsustainable practices have consequences. I'd love to see at least the treat of a bill like this in the US. 🤔 Skeptical: Difficult enforcement, and companies may just pass costs on to consumers. It needs to be part of a broader shift toward conscious consumption, not just a standalone solution. What do you think of France's approach? Weekly sustainability round up for Design, Development & Supply Chain ⬇ 🔎 Traceability Tesco have introduced digital product passports for clothing, ahead of the upcoming EU legislation (ESPR) on product traceability. These passports offer customers detailed information on the materials and environmental impact of their products. Also huge kudos to maje for their user-friendly and informative DPPs I recently saw – a great example of customer-focused traceability! ♻ Recycling! Zara 's latest women’s collection features Circ Lyocell, a fabric that resembles silk but is made from 50% recycled textile waste. Four pieces in this collection are crafted from 100% Circ Lyocell, showing a commitment to circular design through the use of recycled materials and timeless, seasonal silhouettes. CARBIOS (I know I always mention them!) is now eyeing the UK for its next PET polyester recycling plant! FCC has signed a letter of intent with Carbios to explore the establishment of a UK-based plant using their bio recycling technology. This could be a significant step forward for UK PET waste and blended textile recycling. ⚪ Circular Business Its great to see Vestiaire Collective featured in Netflix's hit series Emily in Paris, which helps to boost the resale platform’s profile and engage new audiences on next-life options for their clothes! Additionally, Vestiaire has partnered with e-tailers Mytheresa and LUISAVIAROMA to expand its presence in the US, along with major resale players like eBay, Poshmark and Whatnot. ⛰ Performance! Performance brands often face the challenge of achieving high performance products without relying on hazardous chemicals like PFOA (used for water resistance and durability). British brand Montane Ltd has addressed this with Petrichor, a 100% waterproof three-layer fabric that sets a new standard for PFAS-free protection for performance products. The fabric features a windproof, hydrophilic membrane (helps with moisture management), a 100% recycled nylon 21D ripstop outer (lightweight and durable fabric), and a tricot lining (strong yet flexible fabric) helping to manage the wearer’s microclimate without prohibiting movement.
