"VOICES FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH" UN DAY @ UNON During the 79th United Nations Day celebrations at the UN headquarters in Nairobi, the Kipeto Craftskills was honored with the prestigious UN Person of the Year Award for their notable 100 MW onshore wind farm project in Kajiado. This wind farm, developed by Craftskills Wind Energy International Limited, stands as the second largest supplier of wind energy in Kenya, providing power to approximately 250,000 households. The Kipeto project is a stellar example of local innovation addressing global challenges. By offsetting 175,741 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, it significantly contributes to SDG 13, which focuses on climate action. This initiative highlights the critical role local solutions play in the global fight against climate change. As part of the UN's annual celebrations, the recognition serves as an inspiration for others to support sustainable development. Since its founding on October 24, 1945, the United Nations has commemorated this day globally, with Kenya’s tradition of awarding an individual or institution that furthers the SDGs, embodying the UN’s core ideals. #climateaction #sdg13 #localizingpactofthefuture #un #craftskillwindenergy Story by Joseph silali ABO'S- AFRICA Picture: UN Media

From October 7th to 10th, I will be in Nairobi attending the Off-Grid Solar Forum and Expo and the Humanitarian Energy Conference. There I will be supporting Practical Action and GOGLA’s work to develop a framework to understand and measure the impact of off-grid solar technologies on resilience and adaptation to climate change. At Practical Action, we know that energy access is often a foundational element of resilience and adaptation and, with GOGLA, are developing the framework as a practical step to address some of the most significant barriers to integrating these agendas: 1. Increase investment and prioritisation by showing clearly how technology impacts address the adaptation needs prioritised by key enablers of climate finance including the four climate funds with a mandate from the UNFCCC (#GCF, #GEF, #CIF and #AF), governments and private investors. 2. Build evidence and track impact by enabling high level monitoring of progress in the use of off-grid solar to support resilience and adaptation across the sector as well as indicators to measure impacts by specific technologies for different groups and contexts. 3. Incentivise best-practice by providing guidance and resources to motivate actors, including off-grid companies, governments and NGOs, to promote and apply technologies in ways that enhance resilience and adaptation outcomes and reduce the risk of maladaptation. Please reach out if you would like to connect! I am keen to speak with GOGLA members and other target organisations (off-grid companies, donors, NGOs, researchers etc) to understand their priorities and capacities for engaging with such a framework. #GOGSFE24, #HEC24, Global Platform for Action (GPA), #Cleanenergy, #SDG7, #ClimateAction, Practical Action Susie Wheeldon, Anne Waburi, Mattia Vianello, Zibusiso Ncube, Dorcas Robinson

In today’s The Daily Monitor Newspaper, I share my reflections on the pressing need to enhance energy efficiency and conservation in Uganda. At #COP28, and as highlighted in the #UAEConsensus, the global agreement based on data and research from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA), calls for tripling renewable energy deployment and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. Conceptually, energy efficiency connotes using less energy to perform the same task, thereby eliminating energy waste. For Uganda, embracing energy efficiency and conservation promises a great array of benefits. In the first place, it reduces the strain on the national grid, making energy available to more people without the immediate need for extensive new infrastructure. Energy efficiency and conservation can also go a long way in lowering energy costs for households and businesses, thereby freeing up resources for other developmental needs. The residual disposable income, as a result of the energy savings, can then be expended on accessing social services and other household essentials that would otherwise have been unavailable due to affordability shortfalls. Accordingly, the government of Uganda must expedite the #EnergyEfficiencyandConservationBill because embracing energy efficiency and conservation is not just an environmental imperative but a pathway to equitable development and a sustainable future. Through collaborative action and innovative approaches, Uganda can set a compelling precedent for other nations in the region and beyond. 🗞️ ICYMI: Empowing Developing Nations — The Namibian 🇳🇦 🔑 Key Excerpt: “Wealthy nations, while leading the charge towards clean energy, must recognise their responsibility to empower rather than dictate the energy policies of developing nations. Instead of imposing blanket restrictions on fossil fuel usage, they should prioritise collaborative efforts aimed at sustainable development and energy access for all. One approach is for wealthy nations to share their technological advancements and expertise in renewable energy with developing countries. By investing in research and development, wealthy nations can drive down the costs of clean energy technologies, making them more accessible to all nations.” Full Article Below ⬇️

Denmark, led by the Danish Energy Agency (DEA), is actively involved in numerous bilateral energy partnership projects and programs with ODA eligible developing countries, emerging economies, and developed countries. Several of these partnerships have been consolidated into a comprehensive multi-country initiative known as the Danish Energy Partnership Programme (DEPP). Now, a new framework program, DEPP IV, has been proposed for the period 2025 to 2029. DEPP IV aims to combine the next phases of the ongoing energy partnerships with India, Kenya, and Brazil into a single framework programme. Its objective is to support the countries in developing climate change mitigation strategies and policies aligned with their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to the Paris Agreement. The overarching ambition of DEPP IV is to foster improved and more resilient regulatory environments conducive to an equitable and inclusive green transition. PEM is providing support throughout the formulation process, drafting both a framework programme document and the country-specific programme documents for the government-to-government collaboration with Brazil, India, and Kenya.
