Must watch webinar of 2024!
The recording is published! ⚡ We were honored to host Professor George Kuchel from the University of Connecticut for an insightful keynote on Education in Healthy Longevity Medicine. This engaging webinar, co-hosted by Professor Evelyne Bischof, MD, PhD and Professor Alex Zhavoronkov, covers a comprehensive agenda, including: 🟣Retelling the now “traditional” story of geroscience 🟣How we accelerate progress from bench to bedside 🟣The role of geroscience in vaccine research 🟣The role of research networks 🟣Addressing multifactorial complexity and heterogeneity of aging 🟣The role of geroscience education The keynote presentation is followed by an engaging Q&A session where participants explored key aspects of geroscience and its applications to education and translational research. Prof. Kuchel is a distinguished leader in the fields of Precision Gerontology and Geroscience. As the Travelers Chair in Geriatrics and Gerontology and Director of the UConn Center on Aging at UConn Health, his work focuses on enhancing function and independence in older adults by addressing the heterogeneity of aging-related declines in host defense, mobility, cognition, and bladder control. Prof. Kuchel leads multiple groundbreaking initiatives, including the UConn Older Americans Independence Pepper Center, the NIA Geroscience Education and Training Network, and the KAPP-Sen NIH Common Fund Cellular Senescence Tissue Mapping Center. He also serves as MPI of the NIA Translational Geroscience Network, advancing critical research that bridges science and clinical applications. The power of patients at the #NewHomeforNeuroscience 🏛️🧠 Professor John Duncan, consultant neurologist at #TheNationalHospital and UCLH clinical lead for #256GraysInnRoad says, "What people don’t often realise is that many ideas for research aren’t just thought up in university corridors, they actually come from patients themselves and their families. The facility will enhance this two-way dialogue, inspiring more improvements for treatment and care." Here are 3 reasons why patient involvement will be key at the new centre: 1️⃣ Increased research participation: There is a gap in research accessibility and finding ways to make this more available will be crucial in helping to advance treatments for neurological conditions. 2️⃣ Accessible Research Opportunities: The centre will provide wide access to research opportunities for all patients, making study information readily available through various resources. 3️⃣ Promoting Inclusivity: The aim is to create an inclusive environment for all, including ethnic minorities, who are underrepresented in research. Efforts will be made to offer individuals from all backgrounds equal opportunities to participate. By giving patients the opportunity to participate in studies, they will shape the future of treatment and care for neurological conditions. I am over the moon to see our recent systematic review published in Age and Ageing, the journal of the British Geriatrics Society, by Oxford University Press. We investigated individual symptoms of delirium reported in studies of postoperative populations 🏥🧠 - 4,367 abstracts/titles screened 🧐 - 694 full text reviews 📄 - 62 studies included 👍 - 11,377 patients 🧍♀️ - 2,049 patients with delirium 🧠 - 78 differently described delirium symptoms 😮 Notable heterogeneity and lack of standardisation! Read it here: https://lnkd.in/e8nrpPu7 This article made up a chapter of my PhD thesis, and it’s wonderful to see it in print!

Our colleagues at Wits Planetary Health Research have published an important article in Nature Medicine, titled “A systematic review and metaanalysis of heat exposure impacts on maternal, fetal and neonatal health.” The study is openly accessible here: https://lnkd.in/eQ_3RAQt. This landmark study presents pivotal findings on the impacts of heat exposure on maternal, fetal, and neonatal health. As the most comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis conducted in this area, it synthesises data from 198 studies across 66 countries. The findings demonstrate the significant risks that rising temperatures pose, with clear increases in preterm births, stillbirths, and maternal health complications—highlighting the urgent need for climate-adaptive health interventions.

Researchers at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine are shedding light on the link between social factors and diabetes rates in Appalachia. Sam Borgemenke, a second-year medical student, alongside Dr. Allyson S. Hughes, discovered that three key social determinants—children in poverty, food insecurity, and overall socioeconomic status—are significantly correlated with diabetes rates in southeast Ohio. Social determinants of health, such as access to care and nutritious food, play a critical role in shaping health outcomes. With diabetes rates in Appalachia doubling the national average, understanding these factors is paramount to improving care and policy. Borgemenke and Hughes' groundbreaking study, soon to be published in the Journal of Primary Care and Community Health, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive approaches to healthcare. By addressing social determinants, we pave the way for better diabetes management and prevention strategies. #ohiouniversity #foreverohio #research #innovation #diabetes #southeasternohio

🌟 Welcome to the Department of Health and Exercise Science, Lyndsey DuBose! 🌟 Meet Dr. Lyndsey DuBose, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University, who’s making waves in the field of heart and brain health! 🌿 Dr. DuBose’s research focuses on how various life factors across all genders influence the aging of the heart and brain. Her passion lies in addressing healthcare gaps for historically underrepresented groups, like women and people with a uterus, who have been left out of much biomedical research. 🧠💗 One staggering fact? Menopause isn’t even a required topic in medical school curricula, despite impacting half of the population. Dr. DuBose is determined to change that by empowering students to ask critical questions about how gender and reproductive health influence medical outcomes. Her goal? To create more inclusive healthcare for everyone. 🙌 Beyond research, Dr. DuBose is dedicated to building an inclusive community in her classroom, preparing HES students for careers in health professions where they can lead with empathy and awareness. When she’s not in the lab or classroom, you’ll likely find her hiking in the Colorado mountains, walking her dogs, or spending time with loved ones. 🏔️🐾 "My hope is that our research helps people feel seen, included, and empowered about their health, and that our students go on to demand these topics be included in their training." Thanks for telling us a bit about yourself, Dr. DuBose!
