In 1934, Germiston High School Rowing Club (GHSRC) was born, and for 90 years, we've been fostering teamwork, discipline, and passion for rowing. This milestone year, we face an unprecedented challenge. Our primary funding source, school fees, has plummeted to a record low, threatening our very existence. Despite this setback, we're determined to celebrate our 90th year in style. We want to attend the prestigious Boat Race in Port Alfred, a tradition we've maintained since 2013, with only two exceptions. But with our approved budget slashed from R192,000 to R65,000, we're already R12,000 over budget. As a co-ed school, our costs are higher, but we wouldn't trade our inclusive spirit for anything. We've always found a way to make it work, but this year, we need your help. The Ask: We're not just rowing for ourselves; we're rowing for our legacy. We're rowing for the generations of rowers who came before us and those who'll follow. We're rowing to ensure our club reaches its 100th year in 2034, regardless of the school's financial situation. Objectives: 1. Raise funds for Boat 2024 and our 2024/25 rowing session. 2. Cover essential costs, including fuel for coaching and transportation to regattas. 3. Assumptions people make of rowing: 1. It’s easy. 😂 Just ask James Corden 2. It’s expensive ❌ Love Rowing and various clubs including mine, Ross Rowing Club, have set up free or very low cost sessions to welcome young people, people with disabilities, people who are unemployed or low waged. 3. It’s posh 🙈Now then, depends who you meet. Is it egalitarian? Historically it was an able bodied men’s sport. With effort that got moved to a men’s, women’s and children’s sport, including adaptive rowing at all levels. Historically it was predominantly privately educated people because rowing was taught there. Nowadays thanks to a clear focus by Love Rowing and British Rowing, on inclusion, including helping state schools and community clubs to widen participation, we are shifting the dial. The more people see and hear of people in their communities loving their rowing, the more they feel welcomed and at home in our beautiful sport.

The National Coordinating Committee – Swimming for Disabled People (NCC-SDP) has introduced a small grants fund aimed at increasing the involvement of disabled individuals in swimming activities. Grants of up to £500 are available to support innovative projects that provide life-changing support, impact, and insight. These grants are ideal for projects or clubs making a significant difference to a smaller group of individuals, rather than large-scale, one-off events. The focus is on fostering deeper inclusion and access to water, from hydrotherapy sessions to competitive para-swimming opportunities. While most grants will be up to £500, exceptionally innovative proposals may be considered for larger amounts. Another step forward with the establishment of an Independent Commission to undertake a much needed and long awaited review of the water industry.
