On Thursday, June 27th we hosted our Freedom of Food event in Miami. As of today, July 1st, it is illegal to cultivate, transport, or serve cultivated meat in the state of Florida. Outside the event last week, our CEO Uma Valeti, MD snapped a selfie in front of a digital advertising truck attempting to dissuade our supporters from trying cultivated meat. We love that he can simply smile and take it in. After all, they say, ”Those who aren't criticized, may not be doing much.” As for their arguments, here is our response: 🐔 Using cells capable of making perfect copies of themselves means we can use a single cell sample from a single chicken for YEARS - and save thousands of animal lives in the process. 🍺 Our cultivators are a type of bioreactor, which is simply a tank where a biological process takes place. Beer and vinegar are two common foods made in bioreactors. ✨Our process is inherently clean, minimizing the chance of pathogens in the process and no need for antibiotics. Conventional can’t say the same. 😋 We’re hardly making “mystery meat” - our USDA-approved chicken is made almost entirely from real chicken cells, plus a couple common food ingredients to help the cells connect! We considered our event a great success, but it is still just a drop of bucket in the world of meat consumption. It seems as though some people who are terrified that this drop will turn into a wave. That's fine--it must mean we are doing something right. There is still a long road ahead of us, but these nights, these events, are wins in our book. #UPSIDEFoods #CultivatedMeat #Innovationnotregulation

🍅 A picture for history books yet to be written! Commercial plant bioengineering began with the development of the Flavr Savr tomato more than 30 years ago. Since, there's been tremendous economic and environmental value driven by these technologies as applied to the biggest and broadest challenges in agriculture (mostly improving production of our favorite "universal feedstock," corn). But there have been very few products made directly for the people (a papaya here, a pineapple there...), largely due to the expense of these new tools as well as the cost and complexity of navigating young regulatory frameworks. Between the Norfolk Healthy Produce Purple Tomato, the continuing development of Arctic® Apples and the growing swell of both new startups (Pairwise and many others) as well as consumer-focused development efforts from established players like J.R. Simplot Company, it really feels like we're entering a new generation of bioengineering driven by more diverse companies with more diverse (and consumer-focused) products in mind. I'm excited to see where this leads! #bioengineering #fruitsandvegetables #foodtech #future #syntheticbiology #geneediting
What a journey!!! We’ve overcome a tremendous set of challenges to launch our first product. Yesterday, I bought a clamshell of Norfolk Healthy Produce Empress Purple Tomatoes. Words can’t describe how gratifying this felt! Huge congrats and thanks to our amazing team, partners, and fans. It truly takes a village. Those of you on the East Coast - look for #empresspurpletomatoes at select local grocery stores! Now our journey continues, as we share how bioengineering can solve challenges in our food system and deliver consumers and the environment better products. We will continue leading with a focus on science, facts, open curious discussion, and a commitment to move past old dogma and make the world better!

Did you know that cultivated meat is getting banned in US States? Unbelievably, Florida and now Alabama have enacted bans against cultivated meat, in a mis-guided move. I am in full support of cultivated chicken, and the major step it represents toward a "more sustainable and humane food system" Read below about UPSIDE Foods, my neighbor in Emeryville, ca #climatetech #food
Had a chance to try FDA and USDA approved cultivated chicken in Alabama before it’s banned tomorrow!🍗💔 Huge thanks to UPSIDE Foods for this opportunity! This chicken isn’t just delicious; it could be a major step toward a more sustainable and humane food system. Nothing like state lawmakers banning innovative food technology they clearly don't understand continuing to use unpopular and shortsighted reasoning. "They throw a couple of animal cells in there, throw some chemicals in there, some ingredients, and boom! You get a chicken leg out" -Representative Danny Crawford (R-Athens) For the opportunity for a brighter food future, sign the petition! https://chng.it/ntcBsFSwY4
