During one of our HealthChat sessions with Nurse Vee, held on 11th October 2024 the International Day of the Girl Child, we visited a Secondary School where we discussed menstrual hygiene, personal hygiene, sexual reproductive health and rights, and comprehensive sex education with the School Girls, a young girl bravely asked about the urges that come with ovulation and wanting to be with a man. This question struck a chord in my heart, highlighting a significant gap in education provided by parents and teachers. Many young girls are left to navigate these natural feelings with little guidance, often turning to the internet, succumbing to peer pressure, or falling prey to irresponsible men who take advantage of their innocence. These girls simply need answers and support, yet they are at risk of sexual molestation or even rape. It's imperative that we, as a community, step up to provide comprehensive education and open discussions about these topics. We must equip our young ones with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships. **Call to Action:** Let's work together to ensure that our youth receive the education and support they deserve. Parents, educators, and community leaders, let's break the silence and start these vital conversations. Together, we can create a safer and more informed environment for our children. #SexualReproductiveHealth #ComprehensiveSexEducation #YouthEmpowerment #CommunitySupport #BreakTheSilence #HealthChat #NurseVee #Healthchatwithnrsvee

9 out of 10 young girls were not told about menopause when they were educated about menstruation. "Lack of reproductive health education is a barrier to women's empowerment. It's time to change the narrative. Every woman deserves the right to understand her body, make informed choices, and have control over her reproductive health. Let's break the silence, spread awareness, and advocate for comprehensive sex education. #WomensHealthCafe #ReproductiveRights #EducationIsPower #EmpowerWomen"

Happy World Sexual Health Day! Let’s talk about why we invest in pleasure 🌸 The Case for Her uses its investments in underfunded areas of women’s health as opportunities to learn. One thing we learned through our menstruation portfolio was that MH educators working in classroom settings were often restricted from discussing sex, even when asked by the girls themselves. Education can be a powerful tool to drive progress for bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights, and integration of MHH and SRHR can strengthen understanding of common biological processes across the life course. So in 2019, The Case for Her opened a new portfolio, Female Sexual Pleasure, where we embrace sex-positivity, where sex is seen as a positive, healthy, and natural aspect of human life where people should be able to “embody, explore, and learn about their sexuality and gender without judgment or shame.” What we’ve learned since then is that taking a pleasure-inclusive approach to sexual health and sex education has widespread impacts that result in better uptake of reproductive health products and services and better sexual health outcomes. You can learn more about the benefits or embracing a positive pleasure approach via our incredible partner The Pleasure Project here: https://lnkd.in/dqcFmfDY #SexualHealthMatters #SexEd #PleasureGap #GenderEquality

I urge your support for two crucial initiatives aimed at promoting the health and wellbeing of our nation's youth. Firstly, consider cosponsoring the Real Education and Access for Healthy Youth Act (REAHYA). This groundbreaking legislation seeks to revolutionize sex education in schools and empower states to implement comprehensive programs tailored to their needs. By providing federal funding for evidence-informed, equitable, and medically accurate sex education, REAHYA ensures every student receives the high-quality education they deserve. Supporting REAHYA can create a future where all young people have access to age-appropriate, medically accurate, and comprehensive sex education. Secondly, I urge your support for the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPPP) and the Division of Adolescent School Health (DASH). These programs have a proven track record of enhancing young people's overall wellbeing, mental health, and safety. However, proposed cuts to TPPP funding threaten to undermine their critical work. By providing adequate funding for TPPP and DASH, we can continue to empower our youth with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. Your leadership on these issues could make a tremendous difference in the lives of countless students across our nation. Let's empower the next generation with the tools they need to thrive. #REAHYA #YouthHealth #SexualHealthEducation #Wellbeing #Legislation #Advocacy #FutureLeaders #Empowerment #SupportYouth

Joy for Children-Uganda recently presented its findings on the groundbreaking Constitutional Court ruling that declared child marriage unconstitutional to Members of Parliament (MPs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). This landmark decision is a crucial step in safeguarding children’s rights and tackling pressing issues such as adolescent pregnancy, sexual violence, and the urgent need for comprehensive sex education. MP Hon. Sarah Opendi emphasized the importance of immediate action, noting that these findings will help inform upcoming amendments to the bill. With the support of MPs, organizations like Girls Not Brides, and Equality Now, we’re united in the push for stronger laws to end child marriage and create a future full of opportunity and safety for all children. #EndChildMarriage #ProtectGirls #JoyForChildren Equality Now

This is what Reetika Verma has to say about Indian society's reaction to buying contraceptives. Youth Ki Awaaz and MTV Nishedh have come together to #TalkNishedh. We want to understand the Indian youth's relationship with contraception and how masculinity impacts their sexual relationships. Read on to see what Reetika has to say. "We are a nation of more than 1.3 billion people. For a country that shies away from talking about sex, Indians are definitely having a lot of it. Despite this, the conversation around contraception continues to invite raised brows. This conversation turns even more hushed when it is centred around women. With these topics still being taboo, buying contraception can be a terrible experience for women." I spent #MenstrualHygieneDay with 400 Teenagers, here’s what they are asking 👀: “Why do boys believe that period is disgusting? Even though you talk to them, their mindset is still very horrible. Why do they judge? Why do they blame us? Why are they not ready for change?”. Can a 7-year old menstruate? How can you reduce the pain of #menstrualcramps? Do girls easily have infections more than boys? Why must it be every month? Isn’t it a waste of blood? Why does your period stop when you’re pregnant? My classmates say I’m not normal for menstruating for seven days, what do you think is wrong with me.” . Quality questions that still puzzle many adults. We did well to answer them🎉. These teenagers are curious. If parents, guardians and teachers don’t step up to creatively deliver age appropriate Sex education to their children, they will learn elsewhere, most times from poorly informed peers. Together with our team of volunteers SMILE With Me Foundation: - We taught Menstruation 101. Including menstrual cycle calculation - Destroyed popular #periodmyths, especially on #periodshaming - Guided boys to identify their roles in period health and advocacy - Taught girls about their anatomy, proper identification and correct naming - Spoke about periods and sexual gender based violence. - Had the founder of @lamforyou_ speak on Sustainable period care and hygiene. Many students heard about and saw #reusablemenstrualpads, cups and #tampons for the first time. - Advocated for functional #WASH Facilities - We distributed sanitary products to ALL participants. Yes, including the boys, who were encouraged to share the products and knowledge with the girls/women in their lives. - Gifted engaging participants and their school library @bloomingflowthebook courtesy of @girlsaide and @naijaobgyndoctor. It is a girl’s guide to puberty. - Finally, my best session… Q&A. We had over 50 interesting questions and did well to address as many. The rest will be up on our website. Special thanks to the VC of LASU, Director of the Centre for Response and Prevention of SGBV for having us and Lagos State University International Secondary School for the opportunity to educate. It was mind blowing, eye opening and impactful! #DrZobo

Good my people, A QUICK REMINDER.. As holidays roll in, we often celebrate time off school, family moments and fun activities. But there's a darker trend we can't ignore—an increase in teenage pregnancies, especially in Kenya. What’s causing this and what can we do? 👉 Lack of Supervision: Many parents are busy, working longer hours to make ends meet, leaving young girls with limited guidance and role models during their time off. 👉 Idle Time and Peer Pressure: Without structured activities, teenagers can fall into risky behaviors, influenced by peers or even by social media. 👉 Poverty and Financial Pressure: Some girls may feel pressured to seek financial help through risky relationships, which puts them at a higher risk. 👉 Misinformation About Sexual Health: Open discussions around sex education are still limited, leading to unawareness of reproductive health and the consequences of unprotected sex. Teenage mums empowerment we believe in empowering young girls with skills, awareness and support so they can make informed decisions. This holiday, let’s come together as a community to break this cycle. Let’s support our girls by creating safe spaces, engaging them in activities, and offering guidance. What can we do to reduce teenage pregnancies during school breaks? Share your ideas below! #TeenAgePregnancyAwarenessTeenPregnancyAwareness #TeenMumsEmpowerment #ProtectOurGirls #HolidayPregnancyPrevention #EmpowerTeenagers
