The Global Sustainable Tourism Conference in Singapore brought to the fore pressing issues confronting the tourism and business events sectors.

Last November, at the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Singapore Conference, leading experts came together to explore the complexities of measuring and evaluating sustainability in tourism. This session, featured insights from Eric Ricaurte (Greenview), Saba Kauser (BehaviorSMART), Matt Callaghan (easyJet holidays), and Roger Simons (Marina Bay Sands). Together they told a story of how different stakeholders in the value chain are driving and reacting to the need for measuring and evaluating sustainable tourism. Saba shared how travelers inherently want to do good when they travel, so they search for sustainable hotels. This strengthens the business case for certification as observed by Matt. To get certified, a hotel would need to genuinely practice sustainable operations. Roger shared some challenges he faced with measuring sustainability at Marina Bay Sands and how his team overcame it to push sustainable operations forward. The Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement) partners with BeCause, the Danish start-up revolutionising how the global #hospitality, #travel, and #tourism industries manage their sustainability data, to help tourism and event organisations, including Convention and Visitor Bureaus (CVBs), Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) and National Tourism Organisations (NTOs), gain unprecedented insight into their region’s #sustainable accommodations and offerings. Members of GDS-Movement, an international change agency that acts to catalyse socio-economic and environmental transformation in regions and cities through tourism, can now access a specially designed data overview on the BeCause platform that shows them a real-time, comprehensive view of the sustainability status of their destination’s hospitality landscape. At the first Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Global Sustainable Tourism Conference in Singapore, we saw one of the biggest turnouts with 500 delegates from 55 countries and unveiled key initiatives that that further strengthen our position as a leading sustainable business events destination.   📖 MICE Venue Sustainability Playbook: A practical guide for carbon, waste, and water management, inspired by insights from Singapore’s MICE Industry Carbon and Waste Baseline study.   🏅 Singapore MICE Sustainability Certification (MSC) Framework: Developed by Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS) in collaboration with STB and industry players, the Singapore MSC Framework is the first #MICE standard recognised by GSTC. It aligns with the GSTC MICE Criteria, providing a valuable framework for industry players to elevate their sustainability practices.   🎡 GSTC Attraction Criteria: Developed with the support of STB, this is the first-ever global sustainability standard specifically designed for attractions. Aimed at providing the global attractions industry with a common understanding and clear guidelines for sustainable practices, this sets a new benchmark for tourism with certifications set to kickstart in 2026.   These initiatives, aligned with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, are transforming our MICE industry. As a short-term rental property manager or hosts, we hear a lot of negative press around resistance to short-term rental tourism, and we can feel that our sector is so often the scapegoat for any negativity within the local community. But let's flip that narrative and celebrate when local area tourism strategies have embraced and are being recognised with European awards for implementing sustainable and smart tourism practices to attract and manage visitors in a more positive way. Turin has been named the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2025, and Benidorm is the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2025. With sustainability high on the agenda for our sector these awards will shine a light on these cities for being innovative and proactive in their green and smart tourism practices Turin won the award for being a "cultural lovers dream destination" attracting additional visitors and generating revenue for the city through cultural events like the Turin International Book Fair attracted over 200,000 attendees, generating €27 million in local spending. Benidorm, an area which attracts millions of sun-seeking beach lovers every year, it has introduced a number of green sustainability practices for smart water and carbon emissions management and introduced a mobile app giving real-time updates on weather and beach conditions, and local events, to help the flow of visitors and reduce overcrowding. if sustainability is part of your business strategy, local area initiatives like these can help you reposition your service value proposition to attract the right guests to your properties.
