🧐 When it comes to writing your health condition copy, you might be missing one of your biggest sources of content. How often do you ask patients and families after they received care what they wish they had known? Especially when it comes to serious conditions, at some point we all have to dig deep to become armchair experts for ourselves or our loved ones. Does your copy answer... ✍️ What it's really like to get a procedure or refuse treatment? ✍️ What to expect during recovery ✍️ What are typical and rare side effects of a therapy? Your copy doesn't just exist so people can find and choose your health system. Done well, it can be a part of patients' care journey. So many hospitals have patient and family advisory councils (PFAC). Consider asking them about your copy. You'll no doubt learn something. H/t to Sara McKinniss for inspiring this post.

🌟 Embracing the Journey: A Personal Story of Healing and Advocacy 🌟 Hello, LinkedIn community! I'm excited to share that on October 28th, I'll join a remarkable panel hosted by Healthcare Excellence Canada during Patient Safety Week. The webinar, "Expanding Perspectives: Understanding and Reducing Healthcare Harm," will delve into the often-overlooked psychological, social, and spiritual harm in healthcare. As someone who has navigated the mental health system and experienced its challenges firsthand, this discussion holds a special place in my heart. It's a chance to share my story and advocate for a broader understanding of healthcare harm—an understanding that goes beyond the physical and embraces the whole person. This webinar is not just a platform; it's a call to action for all of us to listen, learn, and lead with empathy. Together, we can create a healthcare system honouring every aspect of our humanity. If you want to explore these important conversations, I invite you to join us. Let's broaden our perspectives and work towards a future where healthcare harm is a thing of the past. Thank you for being part of this journey. 🌿 To register for this webinar: https://lnkd.in/gz_du8_E #HealthcareExcellence #PatientSafetyWeek #IndigenousHealing #MentalHealthAwareness

Advance Care Planning (ACP) is about thinking ahead and writing down what's important so your loved ones and health-care team can honour your wishes if you're unable to speak for yourself. It can begin at any stage of life and can be revisited throughout your life journey. It creates peace of mind for you, and your loved ones. ACP isn't just for older adults or people with serious illnesses. It's something that everyone should consider, regardless of age or health status. Contributors from our Patient Voices Network helped to create our new My Advance Care Plan, a unique, easy-to-follow workbook that helps you record your wishes for your future health care. October is Long-Term Care Planning Month so we wanted to share some tips to help you prepare for future care needs: 🔹 Evaluate Your Health: Regularly assess your health and potential care needs. This helps you plan for the type of care you might require in the future. 🔹 Research Care Facilities: Visit and compare different long-term care facilities. Understanding your options can help you make informed decisions when the time comes. 🔹 Discuss Plans with Family: Have open conversations with your family about your long-term care preferences. This ensures everyone is on the same page and can provide support when needed. Plan wisely for peace of mind! 🌟

3 ways to make it IMPOSSIBLE for patients to not listen to you. 1. Share patient stories. Instead of inundating people with mundane clinical information, most of which they'll forget within 24 hours (fact), try relaying the information in the form of stories. People will remember stories (also fact). 2. Share your own story. Doctors have consistently told me that when they share their own health conditions or struggles that align with the patient, an immediate connection and bond forms. 3. Do less talking, more listening. Listening communicates concern, and when people know you care, and you're in a position to help them - they're more apt to want to hear what you have to say.

@DisasterReady is a new free online course from @HumanityInclusion and @MSF. Using the evidence-based Activity Independence Measure-Trauma (AIM-T) tool this course teaches healthcare professionals a way to measure patients’ independence in daily life activities in crisis-affected contexts. Too often we find that trauma care in humanitarian settings is focused on saving life and limb, overlooking rehabilitation. Better equipped health professionals can make the difference in improving patients’ independence in daily life activities. More about the course and how to enroll here: https://lnkd.in/dgp2KW_7

1moThis is a great question for healthcare communicators to ask. I always ask patients at the end of the interview about lessons learned along their journey with XYZ condition of provider and these answers are always content gold.
