The EU is uniquely positioned to play a leading role in addressing this global food crisis. But how to do that? By committing to strong financial and policy actions to ensure that everyone, especially children, enjoys #ENOUGH nourishing food so they can thrive. Today October 16 is World Food Day. As the global population grows, hunger persists. Despite sufficient food production, 733 million people worldwide face food insecurity (FAO). This year's theme, "Right to Foods for a Better Life and Future," highlights the urgent need to address hunger and malnutrition. Food is a fundamental human right, essential for survival and well-being. Yet, crises like conflict, climate change, and economic downturns threaten our food systems. We must transform these systems to ensure food security, protect the environment, and create inclusive livelihoods. Today, we honour the countless individuals who are working tirelessly to ensure that everyone has access to food. From farmers and food producers to community organisers and volunteers, these #FoodHeroes are making a difference in the lives of millions. On this #WorldFoodDay , let's recognise their dedication and commitment to ending hunger and malnutrition. Their efforts are essential for building a more just and equitable world. The main issue isn’t how much food there is, but whether people can actually get to it. Things like economic problems, conflicts, and problems in getting food from one place to another can stop people from getting the food they need. Also, a lot of food goes to waste—food that's made but never eaten. Tearfund's partners are helping communities overcome hunger and improve food security in 12 countries, including 3 countries listed among the top 8 countries facing the most severe food crises globally. #NourishedForLife Discover more facts about food insecurity - https://lnkd.in/grVBiVRT

This #WorldFoodDay, we reflect the constant need to nourish our ‘ohana amid the rising cost of goods – with nearly 1 in 3 households in Hawai‘i being food insecure. This year’s World Food Day theme, Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future, resonates deeply with Hawai‘i Foodbank’s mission. Ending hunger in Hawai‘i doesn’t have a singular solution, but requires effort from the entire community. Goal 2: Zero hunger (Sustainable Development Goal, 2) It's World Food Day! Hence, I went through some publications. Which should be of utmost priority - Hunger, malnutrition or food insecurity? While I tried to analyse the three concepts, I realised that you cannot completely divorce one from the other. Can a person be hungry, and simultaneously, nourished? No. Can a person be hungry today, and sure of tomorrow's meal? No. The implication of this is that; the resulting effect of hunger is malnutrition, and food insecurity. If you're reading this with a full belly, it might sound like a collection of gibberish. Perhaps, the hoi pollois would understand better. Hunger might be the kettle of fish of some, but let's all sort it. To those who have in abundance, do well to extend to others. As in the motto of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, Let there be Bread! I'm a Writer, and this is my two cents! Happy World Food Day! #worldfoodday #foodsecurity #SDG2 #FAO #zerohunger Picture Credit: World Food Day 2022 - Daily Trust https://lnkd.in/dihA5kSe

Can tired tomatoes make a difference? 🍅 In September, The Great Unwaste was launched to provide tools to help reduce the 7.7million meals that Australian’s throw away every day. Last week Foodbank Australia’s 2024 Hunger Report was released, detailing how nearly 2 million Australian households experienced severe food insecurity in the past 12 months. Which brings me to Saturday morning, a nearly empty fridge and some very tired looking tomatoes. Do I put those tomatoes in the bin or in a soup? While my soup or bin decision will not impact food insecure households, it does impact how my family will think about food and hopefully inspire them to make good choices. What’s my point? All the corporate programs, government money and advocacy does not make any difference unless I make the right decision in front of my fridge on a Saturday morning. Make the soup! Thanks for sharing this great report Global Alliance for the Future of Food.. I believe that, building a healthy and resilient food systems requires a circular economy for food. Since the Covid-19 crisis has exposed the structural weaknesses of our current food system, calls for change are gaining traction. Moving to a circular economy for food presents an attractive model that works to increase the resilience and diversity of supply chains through regenerative practices, design out food waste, and create transparent value chains. Applying circular economy strategies would help build resilience at all levels and respond to some of the existing vulnerabilities. Beyond building shorter supply chains to secure safe food supplies and guarantee decent livehoods for farmers, supporting and developing regenerative agricultural practices, that work with nature and not against it, is essential. Contrary to conventional fossil-fuel based agriculture, regenerative farming enhances and rehabilitates the health of soil, improves its productivity, helps sequester carbon, and offers greater diversity of food production needed for a healthy diet. These practices, including conservation tillage, crop rotation, and cover crops build rich and resilient soils that can better withstand recurring climate change impacts like flooding and drought. Regenerative agriculture is crucial to curbing the negative environmental effects of our current food system. A circular economy applied to the way we produce and manage food resources could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 by 5,6 billion tonnes CO2e corresponding to a 49% reduction in projected business as usual food systems emissions.
Global hunger has increased every year since 2019. Last year, over 281 million people faced food deprivation that threatened their lives or livelihoods according to the World Food Programme's new report. Conflict and insecurity, economic shocks and weather extremes drove food crises across the world. The new data on global hunger is an urgent call to action: we must transform food systems to be more resilient to shocks! What do you think are the ingredients for food systems resilience?
