This week on the podcast, we sit down with indie author Samarra St. Hilaire, MS, OTR/L , who recently released her debut YA novel, Brushed Between Cultures. A compelling story about navigating cultural expectations, chasing dreams, and the unshakable bond of friendship, Samarra’s book is a must-read for anyone balancing tradition and independence. Beyond her work as an author, Samarra brings over 22 years of experience as an occupational therapist working with children. In this episode, she shares how her Haitian upbringing in Brooklyn shaped her writing, the lessons she’s learned as a self-published author, and how her career as a therapist influenced her ability to create relatable, multidimensional characters. Tune in as we explore the powerful themes of resilience, identity, and the courage it takes to follow your own path. Whether you're an aspiring author, a creative navigating family expectations, or simply looking for inspiration, this conversation is for you. #careeradvancement #nuance #culture #myjourney 📖 Brushed Between Cultures is available now on Amazon! 🎧 Listen to the episode and join the conversation!

Been listening to Simu Liu's memoir, We Were Dreamers, and I've gotten to the part where he talks about his parents beating him... While many people might be aghast, this was just like my upbringing. Rolling pins to open palms. Feather dusters to backs of thighs. Kneeling on linoleum facing a corner. Those were simply normal occurrences. For tiger parenting. For children of immigrants. We were expected to be perfect. To make sense of the sacrifices our parents made for us. We were now expected to talk back. To have feelings. To fight back. That's precisely why I created my podcast. Because tiger parenting is still alive and well. And for someone who's been raised in two opposing cultures — Asian and American — we need people to see us. To hear us. To understand us. Because there are beautiful gifts from our family of origin. There are wonderful opportunities in the country where we were raised. There's also a lot of pain. When we feel seen and heard, we can articulate the healing that we need. May you find a resource that gives you the words, too. Latest episode of my F*ck Saving Face podcast is out now — includes chapters from the book I'm working on, "How to Disappoint Your Parents in 10 Shameless Steps: A Modern Asian American Guide." ** Listen on your favorite streaming platforms. Asian-American History For Young People | Episode 109 GRAB A COPY OF Made in Asian America: A History for Young People here - https://www.rfr.bz/lnewi7j or here - https://www.rfr.bz/lnewi7k Asian American history is not made up of one single story. It’s many. And it’s a story that too often goes untold. It begins centuries before America even exists as a nation. It is connected to the histories of Western conquest and colonialism. It’s a story of migration; of people and families crossing the Pacific Ocean in search of escape, opportunity, and new beginnings. It is also the story of race and racism. Of being labeled an immigrant invasion, unfit to become citizens, and being banned, deported, and incarcerated. Of being blamed for bringing diseases into the country. And it is a story of bravery and hope. It is the story of heroes who fought for equality in the courts, on the streets, and in the schools, and who continue to fight in solidarity with others doing the same. This book is a stirring account of the ordinary people and extraordinary acts that made Asian America and the young people who are remaking America today. Today’s episode is about our Reads and Recovery book of the month, Dry: A Memoir by Augusten Burroughs. I loved this book! I’m giving it an enthusiastic rating of 4 Paws! Recovery Readometer Scale: 1 Bark – Not really engaging, but had a couple of interesting moments. 2 Wags – A pleasant read with some enjoyable parts. 3 Woofs – Engaging and enjoyable, a solid read. 4 Paws – Really loved this book; it was hard to put down. 5 Tail Wags – An all-time favorite, resonated deeply on a personal level. I love the characters in his life. He does such a good job of portraying each of them, from Pighead, his former lover and best friend who is dying, to Jim, his undertaker drinking buddy, to coworker Greer—I want to be her friend 😅. So where could I relate to the experiences of the author? Everywhere. That’s what’s interesting about our disease. It doesn’t discriminate. We are all very different people, with very different life experiences, all suffering from the same disease. 🎧 Listen to this review episode whether you read or didn't—I don't have any spoilers! https://lnkd.in/eU2uQkHG #dryamemoir #readsandrecovery #recoverydailypodcast #bookreview #recoverypodcast #recoverydaily #recoverycommunity
