3 Awesome Steps To Smash Perfectionism Immediately

3 Awesome Steps To Smash Perfectionism Immediately

Listen To Article Here (My daughter Sophie was a guest on this podcast)

Dear Friend,

Almost every entrepreneur and copywriter I know struggles with perfectionism.

For example…

I used to put a lot of “unnecessary pressure” on myself to try to make everything perfect.

If I was writing a LinkedIn article I would sit on it for days instead of just sending it out to get it circulating.

If I wrote copy for a client I expected it to be a big winner every time.

If I didn’t get 100% of the stuff done on my to-do list by the end of the day I would stay up until it was done. Even if it required me to stay up all night.

Sometimes I would even try to write at 3 A.M. after being up for days on end…

This never turns out very well.

This Behavior Is The “Exact Definition” Of Perfectionism

It’s when you have “unrealistic expectations” of yourself and normally everyone else around you too. (The Green Goats and I were not on speaking terms when I was going through this.)

In my 3 years in the marketing world, I’ve noticed that perfectionism is an “extremely common” thing among entrepreneurs.

Especially entrepreneurs who are copywriters.

But here’s the thing…

Being a perfectionist is a “painful experience.”

Why?

Because NOBODY is perfect.

So you’re constantly beating yourself up.

And “holding yourself to unrealistic standards.” These standards usually get “worse and worse”…

Until they get to the point that they “cannot be achieved by anyone on earth.”

So no matter how hard you try or how much success you have…

It’s Never Good Enough!

I experienced this in my first year as a copywriter. Until my wonderful wife pointed out that my “expectations were not realistic.” (This is probably why The Green Goats worship her).

What I have learned since is that “perfectionism never goes totally away” but by taking these 3 steps you can “push it out of your brain as soon as it comes in.”

  1. When you are writing anything word vomit. I got this advice from one of my coaches Troy Erickson. I thought he was crazy at first. Until I tried it. It’s much more time-efficient to write everything down that you want to say in an article and then go back and edit the whole thing at once.
  2. Learn to celebrate the little victories in your schedule. When you write your schedule for the day you should write down the top 3-4 things that you want to accomplish. If you only get 2 of those done? Have a celebration! You scratched something off the list! Do not beat yourself up because you didn’t get everything done. Simply move it to tomorrow's schedule.
  3. Start seeing the glass as half full and not half empty. This is the hardest one to achieve if you're a former perfectionist. But it can be done. Simply think of something positive for every situation. For example, most people gripe about having to pay bills. To switch this into a positive simply switch the wording you use. You get to pay the bills to have a place to stay, have electricity, feed The Green Goats, etc.

Here’s The Real Deal

You’re not going to bat 1000 every time…

This is just reality. You’re human…

And humans make mistakes.

So be a little more realistic

And a little gentler on yourself…

So that you can start to BREAK your perfectionist tendencies.

I can tell you from experience that running your own business is a lot more fun when you learn to do this.

You won’t be so upset or so uptight…

And you won’t put tons of pressure on yourself.

And that’s an incredible spot to be in.

Just ask The Green Goats. They have no pressure at all and they are the happiest animals in the world.

Speaking about The Green Goats I better go. They are getting set up for a pool party in the back yard and they are getting ready to light the tiki torches.

I better go supervise before they burn the backyard down.

All the best,

Bobbie Lee

Great article, Bobbie Lee! The word vomit…info dump is actually very helpful in any writing style. It frees your brain to be creative instead of nitpicking at every word choice. I have an extremely hard time turning off my inner editor and this truly is the best way to do it!

Wonderful article Bobbie!

I like how you said to celebrate the victories. Something is crossed of the list! We need to celebrate what you have accomplished instead of beating ourselves up for what isn't done yet. Easier said than done!
