Being the REAL you at work!
As the year is coming to an end I find myself asking what type of year it has been. I continue to be amazed that after 33 years in the workforce I am still learning. The biggest learning point for me was when a number of colleagues and close friends told me how much they admired me as my work persona was exactly the same at home with friends and family.
It is so hard to show people who you really are at work these days I was told. I was in shock and have to say I cannot be anybody else I can only be me, warts and all, whether that be at home, with friends or in the workplace. No job or career is worth it when you have to create a "work" personality to survive, this means you are not your real self and I can only imagine this must be draining. In my humble opinion you cannot create passion in your work if you have to wear a mask or worse still mask your own personality.
So my biggest lesson in 2016 was that being YOURSELF is not the default position and that there are many people who do and say things to impress others while selling themselves out. My soul and my personal essence and purpose will never be for sale - YOU CANNOT BY MY SOUL and you will get 100% Paul Brant at all times. I feel sorry for those who cannot display real emotion, passion and truth for their work. I spend over 45 hours per week at work and would hate it if I had to pretend to be something I am not. While I am far from perfect I like who I am and will never say or do something to gain favour if it is against my personal ethics or beliefs.
If you cannot be yourself at work ask yourself why, be prepared to examine your own personal processes and action. Do not sell yourself short!, trust yourself, commit to yourself and BE YOURSELF. One friend told me he felt he had 3 or 4 personalities, all I can say is brother you must be tired! Enjoy the journey of being you - no one else can do it for YOU!
