From G20 to Local Initiatives for a Circular Economy (July-Sept 2023)

As India hosted the 18th G20 Summit recently in New Delhi, a lot of attention was drawn to the theme - "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, or the idea of “One Earth, One Family, One Future” drawn from our ancient Sanskrit texts and rooted in the concept of sustainable development.

India's G20 Presidency also witnessed a first-of-its-kind initiative led by 39 companies called the Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Industry Coalition (RECEIC). Hasiru Dala Innovations is one of the founder signatories of the RECEIC along with Tata Motors, Aditya Birla Group, Tata Power, Luthra Group, and Unilever. The coalition aims at knowledge-sharing for optimum resource utilization, minimizing waste, and creating an inclusive and balanced approach to economic growth. The member companies will come up with a plan for its operational mechanism and functioning in the next 5-6 months.

We do hope that this industry-led initiative walks the talk and we see the transition in areas such as power, FMCG, fashion, cement, electronics, packaging, automobiles, etc. that are involved in the coalition.

At Hasiru Dala Innovations, we are elated that the RECEIC was made a part of the official G20 declaration. Following is a snapshot from the declaration where the RECEIC has been acknowledged.

Moving on, we'd like to share brief updates of some of our work during the July-September 2023 quarter.

Waste Diversion from Landfills

We diverted 2,234 tons of waste (in the quarter ending Sept 2023) from reaching landfills through our Material Recovery operations for Dry Waste and Biogas and Composting solutions for wet waste. We onboarded 2,190 new households to our Circular Waste Management service, across Hebbal, HSR Layout, Jigani, and Yeshwanthpur areas in Bangalore.

With more and more corporate and residential premises taking up our services, we aim to build circular communities where we provide a holistic waste management service. In each of these communities, we have provided thorough training programs for residents, employees, housekeeping staff, house help, etc. to optimize the waste segregation levels.

Making Waves in the Event Waste Management Industry

As a leader in the space of event waste management, we are constantly pushing boundaries of innovations that can help minimize the environmental impact of waste. This quarter, besides multiple weddings, we also had the opportunity to manage prestigious events such as the Royal Enfield Scramfest, Bhoomi Habba, and Bengaluru Ultra Marathon by NEB Sports Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

We are all geared up for the public events season in Oct-Dec, the time of the year when the most happening festivals take place.

Training Event Waste Management Workers

Besides engaging with various event hosts we are also actively focusing on capacity building for our Events team. We recently completed a comprehensive training program for 70 waste pickers specializing in event waste management. Our training session was divided into various aspects of housekeeping execution, providing our waste pickers with the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure the efficient and effective management of event waste, and interacting professionally with the hosts and guests.

Participation in the Heart for Earth Festival organized by the echo network

We had great fun and insight participating in the #heart4Earth festival at the Visvesvaraya Industrial Museum in July. It was a pleasure engaging in talks, activities, songs, and storytelling that moved all of us. We spoke with many visitors who were students, teachers, scientists, museum curators, and parents visiting the museum, about waste management by Hasiru Dala Innovations .
