GOOD OR BAD, SMALL DECISIONS COMPOUND

GOOD OR BAD, SMALL DECISIONS COMPOUND

On Sunday I made the decision to quit drinking.

I don't have a drinking problem. I can't even say I have one drink a week.

However, when I do have a drink or two, often related to a social event. 100% of the time I feel like garbage the next day.

On Saturday, I had three drinks: One shot. One cocktail. One vodka soda.

Saturday night, as a result, I ended up having a terrible time falling asleep which spilled over into having a bad day on Sunday, then average day on Monday, and it wasn't until I had the opportunity to sleep for 11 hours last night that I finally feel recovered again on Tuesday to get myself back on track.

Consider this visual below to see how this plays out.

I started last week off strong, worked late a few nights and then the compound effect happened.

One small decision that "One drink won't matter", turned into "I may as well have another drink", and then "One last one" before I called it a night.

In my keynote, The Hero Mindset, I was just chatting with a friend recently about reintroducing the power in Hero Moments, Hero Decisions, and Hero Actions.

In this case,

  1. The Hero Moment was when I had the impulse to have a drink.
  2. The Hero Decision would be to choose not to.
  3. The Hero Action would have been to order soda water instead.

But I didn't make the right choice Saturday night. I talked myself out of it.

Had I made the right choice, this is how my last few days would have played out.

Instead of Sunday being a recovery day, it would have been a rest day.

Instead of Monday being a 12 hr work day that was more of a struggle, it would have been a normal 8hr work day.

Instead of Tuesday (today) feeling good again, I know that today could be a day where I feel like I'm "Killin' it"!

Do you see what I mean?

I remember years ago at one of my keynotes I heard one of the most powerful statements when someone shared what phrase helped them recover from a true alcohol addiction.

They said to "Play the tape until the end".

Each of us, every single day, have moments where we need to make decisions towards what actions we take that determine which path we will be on (red or green) in the days, weeks, months, and years to come.

This is what The Hero Mindset is all about: Hero Moments, Hero Decisions, and Hero Actions where small things make a big difference to help you become a hero in your own story.

Final Thoughts

Before you go, I would like to acknowledge one last, very important thing.

I am not perfect.

I have no intentions to speak about this as though I never make mistakes. I, too, need to continually practice what I preach.

And so, another example of how I put The Hero Mindset into practice is through forgiveness.

  1. The Hero Moment is when I can easily get down on myself for what happened. That moment surfaced repeatedly on Sunday and Monday.
  2. The Hero Decision is in those moments to not choose the negative path of self destruction and self sabotage my day. The decision is that I need to forgive myself for a mistake and decide to carry on with my commitment to get back on track one step at a time.
  3. The Hero Action were small steps such as nourishing myself through hydration, taking naps, eating healthy nutrition, and positive self talk.

That's the reality! Every single day you must choose what mindset you will adopt to help move yourself and business forward in both good or bad situations.

When I screwed up and got myself into a "bad situation" (feeling like crap) I practiced forgiveness to turn things around. It's as simple as that.

From those decisions, I now feel like I am gaining momentum again to deliver a smashing live keynote experience downtown Toronto this Thursday.

I can't wait!!!

If you resonate with this article, please leave a comment below. I love when I chat with people about how little things like this can trip us up, but I know I am not alone.

I know so many people who struggle with the same thing, maybe with something different... but we all have to remember that small decisions compound, good or bad, and when we focus on shifting out mindset towards the right thoughts, that is how we can all become a hero in our own story.

My passion is helping people shift their mindset through my keynotes, workshops, and 1:1 coaching to drive results and embrace change.

Congratulations. I hope your life isn't all about work though. It's fantastic to be ambitious and hitting goals but at the end of the day I'd like to work to live and not vice versa. Sadly we live in times where the work life ballance keeps diminishing and if one enjoys the finer things in life we are chained to work.
