We all know who Matthew McConaughey is and his famous “Alright, Alright, Alright” line from the movie, Dazed & Confused.

But did you know he wrote a book??

As I downloaded the audiobook, I had no idea what to expect… but now I think Greenlights is a must-read for everyone, especially leaders.

One thing he repeatedly says: GET RELATIVE with the inevitable.

When something is inevitable, we have 3 choices:

  1. Persist: stubbornly continue in your pursuit, pretending that the inevitable is not inevitable
  2. Pivot: reframe the inevitable event as an opportunity, a chance to become something new
  3. Concede: let it go, and accept the inevitable situation as it is. You have no control over it, after all.

“Getting relative” means YOU choose how you deal with the inevitable, and it’s helpful to put things into a relative perspective.

It can just about ALWAYS be worse. As we pivot or concede, we shift our mindset back into a problem-solving mode more quickly. And we realize how small of a problem it is in the scheme of things and move on to the things that *actually* need our time and energy.

So if you’re looking for your next book, this is it.

I highly recommend you listen to the audiobook because McConaughey is a very animated and energetic narrator, which makes it extremely inspiring and entertaining.
