Wind Generation in Ireland August 2024
Wind generation in Ireland in August 2024 was the highest ever for an August month in both terms of GWh generated and share of demand.
Figure 1: Daily and weekly % of electricity demand met from wind generation
898 GWh of electricity was generated from wind in August 2024 in Ireland. This was 3.5% higher than August 2023 in terms of GWh generated and 58% higher than July 2024.
In August 2024, wind supplied on average 34.2% of electricity demand compared with 33.8% in August 2023. On average between 2018 and 2023 wind supplied 27% of demand in the month of August.
Figure 2: Wind generation & Demand for an August Month since 2015
Year-to-date in 2024 at the end of August, wind has, on average, supplied 32.5% of electricity demand in Ireland and just 0.6% more electricity so far compared with last year.
Figure 3: Monthly wind generation estimates 2024 in GWh
On a weekly basis in August, wind met 25% of demand for the first four days, 34% of demand for first full week, 32% in week 2, 41% in week 3,and 28% in week 4 (six days).
Figure 4: Daily wind and demand in August 2024
On a daily basis, there was one day in August when wind supplied 60% of demand and eight other days when it supplied between 40% and 50%.
There was one day, August 30th, when wind supplied just 5% and one other day (1st) when it supplied 18%.
Note that these figures are based on the SCADA data published on EirGrid’s website. These haven’t yet been quality controlled and, in general, the actual share of demand met by wind is 1% to 2% points lower when all the quality controlled metered data is available.

4moI would have guessed that after my 2 weeks on West Coast.. sustained strong breeze for the whole time.
