🌟 Building Capacity for Burundi’s Energy Future 🌟
We are proud to share the successful completion of the Capacity Building Training on Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Feed-in Tariff Setting & Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), held November 5-7, 2024, in Bujumbura, Burundi. This impactful initiative was jointly organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Direction Générale de l’Energie (DGE), Burundi, under the framework of the Promotion of Small Hydro Power (SHP) for productive use and energy services in Burundi project (https://lnkd.in/gkBaUxD8).
Training in Numbers:
👥 Participants:
36 professionals, including 11 women, from government, public institutions, and private sector organizations.
Attendees were equipped with tools to develop, negotiate, and manage energy projects effectively.
Key Training Objectives:
1️⃣ Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs):
Understanding essential legal, commercial, and environmental aspects of PPAs
Mitigating risks and managing stakeholder relationships
Mastering negotiation and implementation strategies
2️⃣ Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs):
Grasping the concept and development role of PPPs
Evaluating policies, legal frameworks, and model contracts
Guiding participants on preparation and implementation
The training provided a blend of global insights, Sub-Saharan best practices, and specific contextual lessons for Burundi.

Dominique Savio Barahira, an experienced energy consultant from Rwanda, delivered high-quality sessions tailored to regional needs.

By enhancing the capacity of government officials and energy stakeholders, this training supports Burundi’s efforts to strengthen its energy infrastructure, create cost-reflective tariffs, and foster sustainable partnerships for energy development.
What’s Next?
As the Promotion of Small Hydropower (SHP) project concludes in June 2025, the focus will shift to:
-Providing follow-up assistance to participants for the practical implementation of their knowledge.
-Exploring opportunities for continued capacity building and new initiatives to expand Burundi’s energy sector.
