About us
The Young and Resilient Research Centre (Y&R), embedded within the Institute of Culture & Society (ICS) located on the Parramatta campus of Western Sydney University, embraces an integrated mode of research and development, education, training and enterprise to research and develop technology-based products, services and policies that strengthen the resilience of young people and their communities, enabling them to live well and participate fully in social and economic life. Our research projects span five research streams and diverse areas, including digital participation, health and wellbeing, education, social inclusion, children’s rights, and climate change. By delving deep into these critical aspects, we aim to create a positive impact on the lives of young people and their communities.

Y&R's Co-Director Philippa Collin just published this excellent article on civics education in The Conversation Australia + NZ. It was written in response to new national data which shows that Australian school students’ civics knowledge is the lowest it has been since testing began 20 years ago. In the article, Prof Collin states that although "the latest results are certainly concerning....as a researcher of the political lives of young people, I would caution against assuming young people “don’t care” about politics, or are unable to engage in it." She later suggests ways to improve the current system and calls for young people to be given more opportunities to co-design and co-research so the education they receive has a more meaningful impact and is better suited to their needs. Young and Resilient Research Centre reposted this
New research commissioned by the Whitlam Institute, with the Young and Resilient Research Centre, highlights that young Australians are incredibly motivated to participate in our democracy and create change for their communities and futures. Yet, while young people are deeply engaged with issues like social justice and climate change, they feel that the current democratic systems aren't effectively responding to their concerns or reflecting their values. We believe that Australian democracy thrives when we listen to what young people have to say on issues that shape their world and futures. They deserve to have a greater say in their futures.
