My second NJAMA award for this year was the Maternal Health Journalist of the year. I won the same award last year. Again, special thanks go to everyone I have had the privilege to meet, work with etc through my career. I would also like to thank UNFPA Zimbabwe, the sponsors of the award. https://lnkd.in/dCQh8fBf The above link was the winning story. It chronicles the challenges a 72 year old lady went through since she started having a condition that brings shame and neglect to women in society, Obstetric Fistula. It also brings out what she lost owing to that condition, chief among them, the love and affection from her husband who married two more women, totally shutting her out of his life despite living at the same homestead in Chipendeke, rural Manicaland. Her triumph came when, through the help of her church, she was taken to Mashoko Mission hospital for a UNFPA and Partners program on Obstetric Fistula repairs, giving relief to the woman over four decades later. The idea behind the story was to bring awareness to the condition which is less known as many believe it is a curse or something else which cannot be reversed. Obstretic Fistula is one of the consequences of early pregnancies which becomes a reason why the vice is being discouraged at all cost to save women from related challenges. The story also speaks of the joy and relief that the woman finally had where she had lost hope and had resigned to fate. It serves to tell that no matter the age, seeking maternal health services is the way to relief and healing.
