It was great to see so many participants join us for our most recent webinar this week! For this session we focused on leading late career conversations, discussing why these conversations are often difficult and how to approach them effectively. We shared what we see as the main barriers to these conversations and illustrated how avoiding these conversations can lead to loss of expertise, institutional knowledge, and valuable employees. Throughout the discussion we reinforced the importance of normalizing career conversations across all career stages and highlighted various flexible work arrangements that can support late career transitions. Our top 10 tips for facilitating effective late career transitions: 1. Start conversations early and normalize them across all career stages 2. Don't rely on hearsay or make assumptions about ‘retirement’ plans 3. Start early - planning prevents rushed transitions 4. Be aware of age-based unconscious bias 5. Consider various flexible options: part-time, job sharing, mentoring roles, etc 6. Document knowledge transfer plans 7. Focus on transitioning TO something rather than FROM somewhere 8. If appropriate, use long service and purchased leave as transition tools 9. Address 'identity transition' as part of the planning process 10. Watch for signals being sent to other employees about how the organization values mature workers Are you avoiding or feeling challenged by having late career conversations with your team members? "Let them finish their thought, not just their sentence" Sarah Austin and Tom Brockhurst facilitated an energizing session with a team of Engineering leaders to help them foster a culture of innovation. One key takeaway that resonated deeply: When coaching your team, resist the urge to jump in with solutions. Let "them finish their thought, not just their sentence." Too often, we hear the start of an idea and immediately shift into instruction mode. But true empowerment comes from creating space for complete reflection. Those extra moments of silence? That's where the real insights emerge. I watched this transform our workshop discussions in real-time. When leaders held back and truly listened, team members didn't just share surface-level thoughts – they uncovered their own solutions and showed deeper engagement. Remember: Your role isn't to be the solution, but to be the resource where solutions can grow. #Leadership #HRStrategy #ProfessionalDevelopment #Coaching #EmployeeEmpowerment

Mature Age Transition – Are you ready? People live longer and better with a healthy network. Being connected to other people is good for you. Loneliness is a silent killer, it increases the odds of mortality by 30% - loneliness is as dangerous as smoking and obesity (Holt-Lunstad JM, et al., 2015). At @Brockhurst Consulting one of the four key factors we promote for a successful transition to life beyond work is ensuring you have a healthy personal network. Active interaction, social connection and regular engagement with others not only keeps us alive, but helps us to live well. In our workshops we support people to think about their network, identity, routines, and health and wellbeing. Transferring these aspects of life into a more sustainable context unlocks the possibility for a long, enjoyable and healthy ‘retirement’ (which could now be up to 40 years!). #retirement #mature_age #transition #worklife #loneliness #live_longer #network #retire #relationships

Mature Age Transition We know that a child born in 2007 is likely to live to 100. As we live longer and longer lives, the way we plan our later years becomes more important, so that we make the most of the longevity on offer to us. Organisations and individuals can engage in processes to maximise wisdom transfer, optimise succession planning and ensure our mature workforce are prepared for life beyond work. Our Mature Age Transition Framework identifies four key pillars: Identity; Routine; Network, and; Health and Wellbeing to use as a planning framework. During our workshops we provide practical tips, insights and action plans to manage this phase of work and life. Curious to know more: Call: 1300 181 211 Email: contact@brockhurstconsulting.com.au
