Sustainability continues to take centre stage in the built environment and is one of Matter's core values being a B corp certified company. Designing to achieve five-star GreenStar ratings is fast becoming the industry norm (and soon to be mandated), presenting an exciting opportunity to explore and promote environmentally responsible materials. Mass timber and green concrete are two such materials that we’ve been actively involved in. Mass timber offers a sustainable alternative to traditional steel and concrete, with a lower carbon footprint and compelling aesthetic and structural benefits. Similarly, green concrete; produced with reduced embodied carbon - is gaining traction as a viable and cost-effective option. By championing these materials and offering carbon reporting, we’re helping our clients meet regulatory requirements, contributing to a greener, more sustainable built environment. We’re thrilled to share that The Buckingham Arms Hotel, a $200 million mixed-use precinct in Walkerville - SA, has officially received planning approval in January 2025. Located just 3km from Adelaide’s CBD, this 6,290 sqm development will feature a 10-storey complex with 130 residential and 56 short-stay apartments, plus 1,230 sqm of retail space, enhancing Walkerville's vibrant community. A key highlight is the seamless integration of the heritage-listed Buckingham Arms Hotel into the new development. With construction set to commence shortly, the Matter team is collaborating with talented project partners and the client to bring this precinct to life. Stay tuned for updates. At Matter, we’re committed to making a difference, both in the structures we design and the communities we support. For our annual Staff Volunteer Day, the team stepped out of the office and into the kitchen, partnering with FareShare to help prepare nutritious meals for Australians in need. FareShare operates Australia’s largest charity kitchens, turning rescued and donated ingredients into free meals for those facing hardship. During our shift, we helped cook and pack hundreds of meals, ensuring more people have access to good food during tough times. Project Update | Little National Hotel (LN) | Adelaide, SA Progress is well underway at Little National Hotel Adelaide, where Matter is delivering smart, efficient structural solutions for this landmark project. Working closely with architects and builders, we’re ensuring a seamless, buildable design that balances aesthetics, functionality and sustainability. With the foundation and substructure work complete, the structural core walls are now rising above ground. Along North Terrace, the feature façade is beginning to take shape, offering a glimpse of the 23-storey boutique hotel that will bring 238 rooms to the heart of the CBD. More to come as we help shape Adelaide’s skyline with considered, practical design.
