Congratulations to Dr. Shaun Barker of #UBC's MDRU - Mineral Deposit Research Unit and UBC Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences on his Innovate BC award.
Ignite Awardees Spotlight 🎥 Ideon Technologies + Dr. Shaun Barker of The University of British Columbia were awarded $300,000 for their project tackling the challenges of mining critical minerals by using cosmic-ray muon #tomography to enable safer, more efficient, and sustainable #mineralextraction. “The #Ignite program is really helping us right here in our own backyard in B.C., working with a mine site in the province, and really proving the efficacy of this breakthrough technology to enable us to then deploy that technology on a global scale to the #miningindustry.” – Gary Agnew, CEO + Co-Founder, Ideon Technologies. 👉 Learn more about this year's recipients: https://loom.ly/0GiDLlY #InnovateBC

A transient orca family was swimming in False Creek on Sunday. Dr. Andrew Trites, a marine mammal researcher at The University of British Columbia attributes the pod's surprising downtown appearance to seals also changing their habits as they hide from orcas, forcing killer whales to hunt in backwater areas like False Creek. https://bit.ly/3VcbUcx

“When we disrupt ocean processes, the first response is from plankton, which then cascades up through the food web,” said ecosystem oceanographer Dr. Brian Hunt who studies human and climate impacts on the #ocean. Human impacts are altering plankton communities, which could have significant ripple effects for ocean life, food security and the climate on the B.C. coast and beyond.

Dr. William Cheung, director and professor at The University of British Columbia's Institute of the Oceans and Fisheries, was recognized with a alumni UBC Achievement Award for Research and Innovation. Dr. Cheung is a leading expert on how #climatechange is impacting our #oceans.

The University of British Columbia geneticists partnered with B.C’s Ministry of Forests and Western Forest Products to develop a quicker method of breeding western redcedar. Genomic selection speeds up the breeding cycle from 30 years to just five because breeders can select the best parent trees faster, giving us a new tool in reforesting climate change-hardy trees. "You can’t separate humans from nature — we are within the ecosystem," says Dr. Fiona Beaty, a marine biologist who earned her PhD at The University of British Columbia. She uses a social sciences method called participatory action research that enabled her to develop relationships with community members and First Nations, and led to a position with the Great Bear Sea MPA Network Initiative.
