Thank you so much to the amazing people behind People and Planet First. Firstly, for creating a much-needed umbrella accreditation for organisations that are *genuinely* impact-led (which are mainly charities and social enterprises). And secondly, for recognising and certifying that Aduna is indeed one of these. Super proud to be in the vanguard; we will do our best to spread the word 🌍🌱🫶🏻 #HealthierYouHealthierWorld

  • 🌿What are Asia's wild ingredients to watch in global aromatherapy markets?🌷 The aromatherapy industry is booming! 📈 Valued at $8.6 billion in 2023, it's projected to grow at an impressive 8.7% annually until 2030. Asia is at the forefront, both as a key market and supplier of trending wild ingredients. What's driving this growth? - Increased recognition of therapeutic applications - Rising demand for natural -particularly wild-ingredients 🌱 Wild harvested plants play a crucial role in the aromatherapy industry. Ensuring their sustainable and fair sourcing is vital for: - Securing future supply chains - Preserving biodiversity - Supporting rural communities Today at IFEAT - The International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades, our CEO, Deborah Vorhies, spoke about: 1. Trending wild ingredients: Jatamansi (FairWild-certified through Himalayan Bio Trade), Sandalwood, Frankincense (FairWild-certified through Nature Connect India Pvt.Ltd.), Elemi, and Neroli 2. Critical sourcing challenges 3. Impact on landscape conservation and resilience of local economies This year, FairWild’s participation at IFEAT is kindly supported by the UK Government through the #DarwinInitiative. We’ll be making connections for two of our sustainable trade projects – promoting responsible sourcing of ingredients from Nepal’s Himalayas and sustainable Frankincense from Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia – as well as promoting our full range of certified sustainable wild-harvested essential oils and ingredients. • 🌿What are Asia's wild ingredients to watch in global aromatherapy markets?🌷 The aromatherapy industry is crucial in promoting sustainable and fair sourcing of wild ingredients and securing their supply chains. Deborah Vorhies, FairWild Foundation CEO, will speak at IFEAT - The International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades on Thursday, 14 November, about some of the wild ingredients trending in the Asian aromatherapy market. She will delve into the critical issues surrounding the sourcing of wild ingredients such as Jatamansi, Sandalwood, and Frankincense from Asia. Jatamansi is already a FairWild-certified ingredient through Himalayan Biotrade, as is Frankincense through Nature Connect India Pvt.Ltd. With market growth rates of between 4.9 and 8.2%, the pressure to sustain the harvesting of these plants contributes to the preservation of their landscapes and the rewilding of Asia. These markets also support economic sustainability in the rural communities that collect these wild ingredients for a living. This year, FairWild’s participation at IFEAT is kindly supported by the UK Government through the #DarwinInitiative. We’ll be making connections for two of our sustainable trade projects—promoting responsible sourcing of ingredients from Nepal’s Himalayas and sustainable Frankincense from Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia—as well as promoting our full range of certified sustainable wild-harvested essential oils and ingredients. I have taken a new role within Ecocert Deutschland & Schweiz and will be working with producers on the implementation of the FairWild standard for wild collected plants! It is estimated that between 60 to 90% of medicinal and aromatic plants globally in trade are wild collected. Some of these plants that are primarily used in the health and wellness industry, include Frankincense, Shea butter, Gum arabic, Argan oil, Baobab, Liquorice, Juniper and many more.. The FairWild standard is a social and ecological certification scheme for wild collected plants and plant products. To protect the natural resource base in collection areas and ensure decent working conditions and payment for collectors, the FairWild standard assesses sustainability of wild collection on the basis of 7 principles: 🌿 The first two principles cover the theme of ecological sustainability to ensure that wild harvesting supports conservation of the collected species and has a neutral or positive impact on the collection area and the broader landscape. These include amongst others, criteria on the maximum quantity and frequency of collection. 🌿 Principles three to five cover the area of social sustainability to ensure that rights of wild collectors and workers are respected and arrangements between operators, wild collectors, and workers are fair. Criteria on child labor, minimum wages and retirement schemes, as well as regulations on customary rights and access and benefit sharing agreements are covered in this section. 🌿 The last two principles cover aspects of buisness suatainability to ensure that harvest and trade of wild resources are legally compliant and ethical business practices in the trade of wild-harvested products are applied. This includes for example the verification of collection permits and authorisation through local communities and resposible authorities. I believe that the Fairwild standard is a well designed tool to monitor the social and ecological impact of wild collection and a way to create better visibility for commercial actors who are dedicated to improving their social and ecological footprints!
