The European Union has just adopted Council Conclusions on cardiovascular health, marking a pivotal step towards safeguarding the well-being of 440 million Europeans. 👉 Why does this matter? European Council Conclusions identify issues of concern for the EU and propose actions to address them. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the continent, affecting over 60 million people, claiming almost 2 million lives every year, and costing €282 billion annually. The Council is calling on European Member States to: 🔴 Expand screening programs to detect cardiovascular risk factors 🔴 Address social and environmental determinants of health 🔴 Improve access to tailored therapies Proposed steps include promoting evidence-based prevention measures, advancing innovative treatments, and leveraging digital health tools for better data integration and research. The newly appointed Health Commissioner, Olivér Várhelyi, has committed to transforming these Council Conlusions into a comprehensive European Cardiovascular Health Plan. The European Alliance for Cardiovascular Health (EACH), of which the World Heart Federation is a partner, applauds this milestone and remains committed to supporting policies that prioritize cardiovascular health. 🎉 Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Mr Olivér Várhelyi announces that the European Commission will develop a new European Cardiovascular Health Plan ⤵️ 📽️ The success and impact of a European CVH Plan will depend not only on what is achieved in the next few years but on how it is achieved so that no one and no country is left behind. EACH calls on addressing societal barriers, underserved populations, discrimination on all grounds, and fundamental inequities that permeate health systems across Europe. At EACH, we know that the time to act is now. Read about the EACH plan and our asks here: https://lnkd.in/exkeqf2s #CVHealthForAll #EUCVHPlan

« Le Noël de mes rêves » just became a reality. A year ago we were in #Strasbourg at European Parliament ( where I took this photo) advocating for the prioritization of the health of over 440 million people. The European Union has just adopted Council Conclusions that will set a milestone for the continent’s #cardiovascular health. Why this matters? #Cardiovascular disease (CVD) – the leading cause of death in the EU and globally – affects more than 60 million Europeans, accounts for over 1.7 million deaths annually on the continent, and costs its economy an estimated €282 billion each year. Our new study highlighting the urgent need for increased #AirPollution monitoring across Africa was featured in Forbes this week! Led by Prof Mariachiara Di Cesare (WHF Science Committee), Mark R. Miller Miller (WHF Air Pollution and Climate Change Committee), and Marvellous .O. Adeoye Adeoye, with support from Clean Air Fund, the study reveals troubling gaps in air quality data and its connection to cardiovascular disease in the continent. It's #IronDeficiencyDay. Iron is essential for keeping us healthy. It brings oxygen to our blood cells, helps convert food into energy and enables us to maintain a normal immune system. However, both too little and too much iron can harm the body, potentially causing arrhythmias or blood pressure issues. Up to 50% of heart failure patients have #IronDeficiency—a common yet often overlooked issue, especially in chronic conditions. Screening heart failure patients for iron deficiency is simple and can significantly improve their quality of life. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dT3kDng6

“It is extremely important to have a plan to combat #CVD because the mortality rate from CVD is very high. Once we have that plan, it will put cardiovascular diseases and prevention, better diagnostics, better therapy, and better health literacy of citizens regarding this issue in the focus of all member states.” We could not have said this any better, MEP Jerković! We are thrilled to cooperate with you and to work together towards securing a European Cardiovascular Health Plan. Welcome to the MEP Cardiovascular Health Group!
