At the end of 2021, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that Seoul would become the first city in the #metaverse, offering public services through Metaverse Seoul. Since then, other South Korean cities have followed suit. The many publicly supported initiatives within South Korea’s metaverse ecosystem present excellent opportunities for Danish actors in virtual technologies who are seeking innovative international partners. These opportunities are set to grow even further when South Korea associates with Horizon Europe in 2025. The report Metaverse and Virtual Tech in South Korea provides insight into South Korea’s ecosystem, including key stakeholders, as well as the research and development potential within #creative industries, #healthtech, #educationtech, #socialsciences and #humanities. That's what ICDK is all about! Bridging Danish innovation and facilitating collaboration between public authorities, academia, and industry.
2025 is the year of 75 diplomatic relations between China and Denmark. To kick off the year, we were honored to welcome Danish Minister of Higher Education and Science, Ms. Christina Egelund, to China last week, where she engaged in meaningful discussions with Mr. Yin Hejun, Minister of Science and Technology, and Mr. Huai Jinpeng, Minister of Education of China. These meetings culminated in the renewal of two memorandums of understanding (MOU) with the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education, respectively. The renewed MOU’s reflect the growing commitment to advancing sustainability, innovation, and education — areas critical to both nations and in alignment with the current green joint work programme between China and Denmark. With representatives from both academia, industry and government present, the Executive Director of Innovation Centre Denmark Shanghai, Anders Sloth Nielsen, moderated a roundtable in which Danish companies exchanged experiences working with research and development (R&D) in China, fostering valuable feedback and fresh ideas. This roundtable discussion also served as a follow-up to ICDK Shanghai’s R&D ecosystem report, published a few years ago, which explored the dynamics of Sino-Danish research collaboration. The dialogue provided valuable insights into how the innovation landscape has evolved anno 2025, reaffirming the importance of partnerships in addressing shared global challenges. At ICDK Shanghai, we’re proud to play a pivotal role in bridging Danish and Chinese innovation, facilitating collaboration across public authorities, academia, and industry. Minister Egelund’s visit underscores Denmark’s dedication to deepening ties with China, and we look forward to supporting the implementation of these agreements through impactful initiatives and partnerships. Addressing opportunities and challenges in healthcare. Last week, Innovation Centre Denmark Boston hosted the annual Clinical Innovation Summit in Copenhagen. This year’s program focused on three central themes: innovation leadership in hospitals, AI in healthcare, and delivering care closer to patients, including hospital-at-home. The summit brought together hospital leaders, government officials, private companies, researchers and other healthcare representatives from Denmark, the U.S., and Canada to address some of the biggest trends and challenges in healthcare. Here are a few key takeaways from the summit: 🔹 AI in Healthcare: The potential is huge, with real examples showcasing AI’s role in improving patient care, streamlining workflows, and even saving lives. However, regulatory challenges remain a key challenge for many innovators. 🔹 Hospital-at-Home: The concept is more than just a trend – this model is proving to be a viable approach to expand hospital capacity while enabling patients to manage care at home. 🔹 Digital Health for Empowered Patients: The future of healthcare is digital-first, with patients accessing efficient, personalized care through tech solutions. Hallym university University Sacred Heart Hospital in Seoul operates 77 service robots for various tasks like delivery, guidance, and emergency response. Since implementing the robots in 2022, the hospital has recorded over 273,000 cases of robot use in 2023 and monthly usage now exceeding 2,250 cases. These robots assist staff by delivering medicine and specimens, and help patients with guidance and quarantine services. This week Innovation Centre Denmark Seoul hosts a five-day robotics delegation with participants from the Danish robotics ecosystem. During their stay in South Korea the delegation will visit three major cities - each a hub for leading universities, research institutes, and companies at the forefront of robotics innovation. They will engage with key stakeholders through site visits, tours, and meetings to foster potential collaborative projects.
