The holidays can be a prime opportunity to clean out your closet - but have you considered the environmental impact of throwing away that sweater? Or the new one you’ve bought to replace it? 👕 The fashion industry contributes an estimated 4% to global greenhouse gas emissions 🏭 The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) approach makes producers responsible for a product at the end of its life. Our 🆕 working paper looks at how this approach could help mitigate the textile sector’s environmental impact. Some key findings: ➡️ Between 2010 and 2022, the reported export weight of used clothing by OECD - OCDE Member countries has increased by 59%. ➡️ Under current policies, plastic waste generated from synthetic textiles is projected to more than double by 2060. ➡️ EPR schemes can enable re-use and recycling by supporting separate waste collection, while transferring the costs from governments to producers. ➡️ France is the first OECD Member country with a fully implemented national policy on clothing, but several more countries are beginning to design and implement new schemes. 🌡️ As global temperatures continue to increase, climate adaptation has never been more urgent. Extreme weather events are intensifying, and governments must act swiftly to build resilience. A new OECD - OCDE policy paper outlines a four-step process for effective climate adaptation policymaking: 1️⃣ Assessing climate risks 2️⃣ Planning and designing policies 3️⃣ Implementing adaptation measures 4️⃣ Measuring and evaluating progress Key insights include: ✅ Setting measurable objectives and ensuring whole-of-government co-ordination. 🤝 Engaging stakeholders and securing sufficient funding. 📊 Overcoming data and methodological challenges to improve monitoring and evaluation. 🌾 Addressing resilience in food systems, which are particularly vulnerable to climate impacts. By embedding these principles, governments can accelerate adaptation efforts and better prepare for a changing climate. What are the key ingredients to achieve a successful green transition for all? Read a new article by Kumi Kitamori, Deputy Director of the OECD - OCDE Environment Directorate, published by the World Economic Forum. It explores how public perception, popular support and citizen engagement can drive sustainable change. From addressing concerns about fairness to fostering inclusivity, the article highlights four actionable insights for policymakers and leaders. Find out more ⤵️
Governments need to tackle long-term, complex, interconnected and systemic challenges, while managing difficult trade-offs. Long focused on #climate and #environmental policies targeting firms, policymakers are now paying growing attention to engaging citizens. To shift from the growth we have, to the #green growth we want, we need all hands on deck to tackle the triple planetary crisis. 🌱 Green industrial policies hold great potential—but only if designed effectively. As countries ramp up efforts to tackle climate change, energy security, and strategic autonomy, green subsidies have emerged as a key tool. But how can governments strike the right balance? A new OECD - OCDE paper in the Net Zero+ series delves into the potential and risks of green industrial policies, offering key considerations for designing effective support measures. Key takeaways include: ✅ Targeted and time-bound support is critical to ensuring impact and cost-effectiveness. 📊 Addressing data gaps on the scale, scope, and impact of policies will help optimise outcomes. 🤝 International co-operation on best practices can minimise risks and maximise benefits. By getting green industrial policy right, governments can drive the transition to net zero while safeguarding economic and environmental goals. 🎄 The holidays are a time for celebration—but also a time of increased waste. Better waste-related practices during the festive season can help curb the environmental impact and support a more circular economy. Recent OECD - OCDE works sheds light on the factors influencing household waste generation, prevention and recycling behaviours—insights that are especially relevant as we aim to reduce holiday food waste and packaging. Here are a few highlights: ♻️Availability matters. The availability of recycling collection services is associated with 15% lower mixed waste generation. 📦Interest in sustainable packaging is growing. 3/4 of households are willing to pay a premium for more sustainably packaged products and 57% prefer reusable products. 💸Charging schemes are associated with increased recycling volumes and greater engagement in waste prevention behaviours.
