📢 CEEW at Hyderabad Literary Festival | Humour can take Sustainability Places As part of the EkoGalaxy curated Climate Conversations at HLF, our Senior Communications Specialist Alina Sen moderated the panel discussion, “Comic Relief for a Warming World," with Brikesh Singh and Raghav Mandava. The session, through sets, gags, conversations, and a lively Q&A with the audience, explored how humour makes climate communication more memorable, shareable, and actionable. Cartoons have an incredible power to simplify complex ideas, evoke emotion, and cut across audiences. Like all CEEW research, our What On Earth!® cartoon series aims to connect the dots, helping audiences see the bigger picture and their role within it. Published every fortnight since July 2021, cartoonists Anoop Radhakrishnan, Shaunak S. and Ashok Adepal have covered critical topics such as #AirPollution, #CleanEnergy, and #ClimateFinance — humanising sustainability, presenting fresh perspectives and solutions, and breaking biases. And this weekend, we held the first-ever What On Earth!® exhibition at the Hyderabad Literary Festival 2025! From the young to the old, we've seen that wit can take sustainability places. By reframing the traditionally Global North-dominated climate narrative, WOE amplifies the voice of the developing world, making these global environmental challenges a part of everyday conversations. It's been featured in MBA and Communications curricula, has been featured in Climate and ESG newsletters, won an innovation recommendation at the Indian School of Business, and made it to the offices of bureaucrats, ambassadors, and across G20 and T20 meetings with its soft power to start conversations. #CEEWEvents | How do we transform India’s food systems to be more sustainable, equitable, healthy, and nutritious? This question was at the heart of our closed-door roundtable on Strategizing for Food System Transformation in India through Public-Private Partnerships in collaboration with Climate Group. There were 28 national and international organisations including civil society organizations, intergovernmental organisations, philanthropies, and certification agencies. Building on the momentum of our first workshop in August 2024, this session focused on: 🌾 Validating and reviewing emerging pathways to address environmental sustainability, improve livelihoods, and enhance nutrition (ELN) across food value chains. 🤝 Strengthening collaborations with CSOs to foster equitable corporate engagement and action. 📊 Exploring data-driven strategies, regional interventions, and policy advocacy to accelerate impact. Here are our key takeaways: ✅ Disruptors in the private sector must focus on affordable, nutritious food. ✅ We need consumer-facing standards using a 'consumer-first' lens. ✅ Navigating the complex landscape of #FoodSystems means transformational thought leaders from the private sector and civil society to work together. The discussions were rich, insightful, and a powerful reminder that transforming food systems requires collective action and shared accountability. Together, we’re reimagining a future that ensures food security, promotes sustainability, and empowers communities. #NewStudy | Treated Used Water Reuse Plan for Thane City Today, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), launched the first-of-its-kind Treated Used Water (TUW) Reuse Plan—a revolutionary step towards maximising water security. This pioneering plan introduces a #CircularEconomy approach to urban water management, focusing on: ✅ Maximizing safe reuse of TUW for non-potable applications like landscaping, industrial cooling, and road cleaning. ✅ Cutting dependence on freshwater and enhancing local water quality. ✅ Upgrading sewage treatment plants to advanced tertiary levels for broader reuse applications. 📈 By 2046, Thane has the potential to:  🌍 Achieve 82% utilisation of its sewage treatment capacity. ♻️ Reuse 88 Million Litres per Day (MLD) of TUW for diverse purposes. 💡 Upgrade the sewage treatment infrastructure with tertiary technologies to fulfill 70% of the estimated reuse potential cost-effectively. The plan also establishes a zone-wise implementation strategy, mapping treated water reuse zones to ensure efficient allocation and conveyance of treated used water to identified users. #Opinion | With US no longer reliable, India must step up on climate action Delayed domestic action on climate change on the part of a large emitter like the US is hurtling the world that much faster toward a devastating 2-degrees-Celsius warmer world. So, where does India stand now? Fellow and Director Karthik Ganesan writes for The Indian Express: "India and the developing world, which are on a path to increasing energy consumption and improving quality of life, are on track to embrace clean technology in its various forms. No matter the road the US takes, building a climate resilient economy and focusing on emission mitigation in the near term must remain an important prerogative for India.
