It’s Day 3 of the #AfriFOODlinks consortium meeting! ✨ Today, we dove deep into City of Cape Town’s dynamic food system. Our field trips took us to two key food hubs, offering a glimpse into how the city’s rich history has shaped its modern-day food landscape—and how the present city environment, in turn, influences how we interact with food. The day began in the historic city centre, before moving to Belville, Cape Town's largest commercial hub, located 23km away. As a major transport node and a Pan-African food hub, Belville offers valuable insights into the intricate connections between food, culture, and community. We interacted with various food system actors, from informal food vendors, to the waste management systems and initiatives by The Greater Tygerberg Partnership. As part of the #AfriFOODlinks Cape Town pilot project, SA Urban Food & Farming Trust has partnered with the city, implementing waste collection with informal vendors and piloting an organic waste programme in an effort to send zero organic waste to landfill by 2027. #AfriFOODlinks is using waste as an entry point for more transversal work in the food system. 𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑒 𝑎𝑛 𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑛𝑣𝑖𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑓𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑠' 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠?" evento di cui andiamo molto fieri e orgogliosi e che ci vede tra gli organizzatori e coordinatori con COSPE Onlus, Community Technology Development Trust- Zambia e il segretariato dell' International Plant Treaty 👉 Organizzato all'interno del progetto 𝐒𝐄𝐅𝐅 finanziato da Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo l'incontro coinvolge anche altri progetti di cooperazione attivi sul tema delle sementi nei paesi del cono sud dell’Africa e ha nel comitato organizzatore le organizzazioni della società civile che gestiscono questi progetti. 🗣️ Partecipano al workshop anche i rappresentanti ministeriali di sette paesi africani: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Eswatini, Uganda,Malawy, Mozambique e sud Africa, per un totale di circa 70 partecipanti, rappresentando così un evento di notevole rilevanza regionale. Il workshop intende offrire all'Africa e all'Europa l'opportunità di condividere esperienze, rivedere le politiche e migliorare la legislazione esistente in materia di sementi. Inoltre fornirà un'analisi dell'International treaty (ITPGRFA) per quanto riguarda la conservazione e l'uso sostenibile delle risorse fitogenetiche (art. 6 e 5) e i diritti degli agricoltori (art. 9). 🤝 Il workshop, infine, esplorerà in modo collettivo e collaborativo le opzioni politiche per la formulazione di una legislazione sulle sementi inclusiva e appropriata, più aperta alla diversità e a sostegno dei sistemi di sementi gestiti dagli agricoltori. In vista del prossimo Governing Body del Trattato, previsto il 24 - 29 Novembre 2025, il workshop vuole contribuire con un documento informativo che raccoglierà punti di forza e debolezza nell’implementazione degli articoli 5, 6 e 9 del Trattato stesso nei paesi che partecipano alla tre giorni. Vogliamo anche alimentare con il report del workshop la discussione in corso nell’Unità Africana su una legge sementiera modello che supporti i sistemi sementieri diversificati. 📌 Il Trattato, che quest'anno compie 20 anni, è un accordo internazionale multilaterale, poco conosciuto nell’ambito della cooperazione internazionale anche se ad essa dedica un interno articolo: il settimo. From November 25th to 27th, 2024, Harare, Zimbabwe will host a critical workshop titled "From Breeding for Diversity to Seed Regulations: How to Promote an Enabling Environment for Farmers' Seed Systems?" This event, organized as part of the "Seeds for the Future" project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), will bring together experts, policymakers, and civil society organizations from Europe and Africa. A Global Effort for Seed Diversity The workshop, co-organized by Rete Semi Rurali ETS, CTDO, COSPE, and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), aims to strengthen local seed systems and address challenges faced by African farmers. With the participation of ministerial representatives from seven African countries and over 70 participants, this event holds significant regional importance. Leveraging International Cooperation The workshop is made possible through the generous support of various donors, including AICS, GIZ, SDC, NORAD, SIDA, and the ITPGRFA Benefit Sharing Fund. This collaborative effort underscores the global significance of seed conservation and sustainable agriculture. A 20-Year Milestone for the ITPGRFA As the ITPGRFA celebrates its 20th anniversary, this workshop provides an opportunity to reflect on its contributions to global food security and biodiversity conservation. By promoting the exchange and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, the Treaty plays a crucial role in addressing hunger and poverty. A Platform for Knowledge Sharing and Policy Dialogue The three-day event will serve as a platform for sharing experiences, discussing best practices, and exploring innovative solutions. Participants will delve into the implementation of key articles of the ITPGRFA and assess the impact of seed regulations on local seed systems. Aligning European and African Perspectives Given the ongoing review of the European Union's seed regulatory framework, the workshop aims to foster dialogue between European and African policymakers. By considering the specific needs and challenges of African countries, it is possible to develop more inclusive and equitable seed legislation. Empowering Farmers and Protecting Biodiversity Ultimately, the goal of this initiative is to empower farmers, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable agriculture. By recognizing the invaluable contributions of women farmers, the workshop seeks to create a future where seed sovereignty and food security are within reach for all.
